My bank internet site says it recommends Internet Explorer.
So I downloaded Internet Explorer Mac, when I open it it says it requires a pc computer, considering I have spent a lot of money upgrading my current computer (macmini) this is a bit rich to be told I should have bought a PC!

I don't want to change my bank or my computer, can someone help!

Troll?

Anyhow.

IE for Mac is incredibly outdated. Any modern banking site is going to work fine in Chrome, Firefox, or Safari, all of which are available for OS X.
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

I actually tried it in Safari which was already installed, and it told me to use Internet Explorer.

Any ideas?

Please give us a link to your bank. IE does not exist on the Mac platform anymore, so that's out, but like shif said any bank should accept Firefox or Chrome if not Safari as well.

Which bank? Username suggests UK, and all UK banks work with Safari as far as I'm aware.

Ah! Yes, you can do some banking with one of those. They're especially useful when making hasty withdrawals.

I wont say my bank as I know Nigerian scammers can come on this site.
If Internet Explorer does not exist then why are the bank asking for it and what the hell did I downloaded. If I had a laptop I could take it to the bank and ask them.

Im pretty good with computers but this has got me stumped.

What are the risks if I click "continue to site anyway" without upgrading to internet explorer?

None. It's an old warning the bank never got around to revising. And btw, going to IE is a downgrade today, not an upgrade.

OH MY GOD I BANK WITH ROYAL BANK OF CANADA wtf is a Nigerian scammer going to do knowing which bank you bank with.... Normally I have patients for n00bs but you are pushing my limits.

Bank recommends IE because its a retarded bank that is clearly out of date. That said most of the time it still works with Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Sometimes they are so out of date you have to change your browsers ID to pretend its IE to get past those stupid messages. Once in a while its because a site uses .net technology which is Windows only sadly but this isn't often. But since you won't say which bank you deal with (for a really retarded reason) we can't really help you.

Yes will do.

Actualy it seems to be working now with safari , but the bank statements only go back 30 days, think this must be because I am using safari not internet explorer and there is not enough memory. im going to take it to the apple shop on saturday to see if they can get internet explorer working.

Thanks everyone except athens who seems very interested in my banking details, NICE TRY!

Memory can not be the problem.

If you are running 10.7 Lion, it is completely impossible to get the old Mac version of IE (5.2.3 was the last one) running.

And if you're running 10.6 or earlier, I can pretty much guarantee that getting an eight-year-old browser running will cause MORE problems than using a current version of Safari.

If you're running into issues with Safari, try Firefox instead.

Do not waste your (and any Apple service guys') time with Internet Explorer for Mac. Seriously.

Also, knowing which bank you're with is completely useless information in terms of hacking you or whatever your misinformed fantasies may be circling. It would, however, be quite invaluable to people actually interested in helping you solve your problem.

Memory isn't the problem, if anything its a javascript issue. Try firefox and see if the 30 day issue is in that too.

THERE IS NO MAC CURRENT INTERNET EXPLORER ok get that through your head already. The last Internet Explorer for Mac which is PPC only was in 2001, almost 11 years ago. Unless you install bootcamp Windows you are not getting any Internet Explorer.

Do you know how the nigerian scam works anyways. They email you saying you won some money but you need to send them your Bank "ACCOUNT" info so they can transfer money to you. Its your BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER that would be stupid to post. Posting what bank you bank with has NOTHING to do with any scams. Its like saying you don't want to share you shop at Wal-Mart because you think the boggy man will get you.

PS what if the Apple Tech is from Nigeria

Typically, online banking websites are at least compatible with Firefox which you can download for free. That worked well for me and City Bank until their website became fully compatible with Safari.

So you downloaded IE for Mac for it said you needed a PC which means you downloaded IE for PC. This typically means, as others have mentioned, that your bank sucks and hasn't gotten around to updating their web page...or they're using ActiveX which banks were known to do years ago which (I think) IE is the only browser to support. Odds are your bank just sucks...

1) You are probably Bess aren't you
2) Most banks only store 30 days of statements online. This is because i) All banks are shit and they want to charge you for getting back statements. My bank charges me £10 a sheet, which is outrageous ii) Banks couldn't really care less about convenience to the customer and iii) see i)
3) I don't know of a single UK bank that doesn't allow Mac users with any current Mac browser and I have a LOT of clients to sample this from
4) Send me your bank account number, sort code and personal password and I'll check it out for you and report back, free of charge. Because it's Christmas

FFS this thread is making my head hurt so much.

Your bank may have changed its policy on online document retrieval and is now limiting transaction history to the past 30 days. You'd have to call your bank to find out about that one.

The Apple Store isn't going to do anything but smile, nod a lot, say "sorry we can't help" and then go to the back and bust up laughing about the guy who seriously thinks he should be using IE on a computer - any computer - in 2011.

If you're that convinced that you *need* to use IE to use your bank's website, get yourself a copy of Windows, install VMWare Fusion, Parallels, or VirtualBox (which is free) on your Mac, load Windows into a VM, and use IE that way.
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

My bank only shows the last 20 days of activity unless I click the happy little "SHOW ALL TRANSACTIONS" button. Then I can view back to the dawn of time. They are happy to to this so they can convince me to give up my paper statements, which I thus far refuse to do.

The guys at the Apple store should charge for their time on this one.

Does it live under a bridge? Does it prey on poor young goats trying to cross the bridge? Or does it fear the light of the sun because that makes it turn to stone? Knowing what kind is often important in determining how to deal with it.

What difference does that make? The name of your bank doesn't also include your real name, phone number and address, does it?

Yorkshire: people are insulting you because you do not appear to be using your brain.

1) Not all banking systems are the same. There is no way anybody can help you without even knowing what bank you are with, or without seeing their requirements page
2) There is no way anybody can help you know what to click on in your banking system if they cannot see the interface provided by that particular bank, see #1
3) That andi*pandi's suggestion helped you was pure luck, but I'm glad it did

I'm not trying to pick on you, just helping you think through how you ask questions in the future so that you can help us help you!

And you didn't want to tell us which bank you deal with because of the scary Nigerian scam which made you look really really really stupid and more a troll then some one looking for help. Had you told us the bank it would have been easy to help you.

4) Nigerian scammers cannot equate your internet nickname and the bank you use to your bank account numbers and confidential information. They can't even get your email address from your internet nickname, not unless you advertise this openly.

Moreover, Nigerian scammers do not target individuals, they just mass spam/phish to whatever address they can get their hands on, as do all spammers.
