Is it possible to upgrade the OS over the network?

I have a second generation imac with no DVDROM drive and a G4 tower running os X 10.4. Is it possible to do a network install of OS X 10.4 from my G4 to my imac?

You should use Target Disk mode instead (much less hassle) -- unless you have an Intel-based iMac, then it won't work.

You could also clone an existing drive instead of doing the installation by hand. But again, this only works if the source is also a PowerPC Mac.

With PowerPC Macs, you could also use target disk mode on the Mac with the DVD drive and the other Mac would recognize the first one as an external Firewire DVD drive.

Is that no longer possible with Intel Macs?

Tiger does not officially support iMacs without Firewire. You will have to buy the CD version of Tiger and then use XPostFacto to install it on your iMac.
