I have a partion that is formatted as UNIX.

I thought I should be able to format it as HFS+, but disk utility doesn't allow me to to do this (under volume format UNIX is the only option).

Any suggestions on how to force an HFS format? Any terminal trickery?

Well, you could use newfs_hfs.

But first, try Disk Utility again and make sure you're selecting the whole device and not just a partition.

I didn't want to format the whole drive... just the partition.

Eventually I booted from a CD and managed to to the deed by running diskutil that way. Very frustrating couple of hours there. I wish diskutil had better help!
