I've had DSL for ages, but just switched to Comcast Cable service after moving to a new location. I'm having some difficulties getting my system to work reliably. I have a D-Link DCM-201 Cable modem connected to my SMC 7004WBR Barricade wireless cable/DSL router using firmware 1.94c. I'm trying to connect my two Macs - a Pismo Powerbook and a Quicksilver G4, both running the latest version of OS X with all supplied updates.
If I let the computers sit for a while, sleep or close the lid of my PB, I lose my connection. In order to re-establish my web connection, I have to power cycle the router and the modem. Looking at the "Status" page for the router shows an IP address of 0.0.0.0 and "Reconfiguring...". The router goes through an endless cycle of "reconfiguring" without re-establishing the internet connection. Likewise, if I click the button to "Refresh" my IP, I lose my connection and enter the same cycle. I must powercycle the router and modem to regain access to the web.
I've got the router set to Dynamic IP since comcast only provides dynamic IP's. I have also enabled the option to "Renew IP Forever" in the router.
I'd like to be able to avoid having to turn the power off on my modem and router several times per day. Anyone have any suggestions on how to avoid this hassle?
