On Monday, Apple released the slightly-delayed watchOS 2 for Apple Watch, following the discovery and fixing of a "critical" bug that prevented its release alongside iOS 9 last Wednesday as originally planned. The new upgrade has a new build number to reflect changes made to fix the undisclosed error in the "golden master," and is now available for download through the Apple Watch companion app on iOS devices.

The marquee feature of watchOS 2 is the developers now have direct control in their apps for the Watch's hardware, such as the speaker and microphone. This will bring features such as dictation to many apps that are presently read-only, and the ability to install Watch apps natively on the device with both improve performance and, to a point, decrease dependence on the iPhone for certain functions and updates.

Among the new features are the ability to set preferred contacts directly on the device, use one of the new included clock faces (some of which allow use of chosen user photos for the background), a new "Time Travel" mode to scan through calendar events, new and different third-party "complications" for the watch faces, and other more minor changes and improvements. Updating the iPhone to iOS 9 is required in order to install watchOS 2 from the companion app.

Five days (three business days) to wait to make your watch do some newer things. How soon can we expect armageddon-tinged wailing about Apple's failings?
Just sayin'

But it's for the Apple Watch. We all know that's a failure from the outset. No need for tooth-gnashing over delayed updates.

Oh, and I'm being sarcastic. I love my Apple Watch, and will like it even more after this update, no doubt.

For the update, I've done everything correctly. My Iphone, updating the software on my Apple Watch, is stuck on "verifying". I contacted apple and they said it was okay but I've been waiting for verifying to clear out for almost two hours. Any thoughts?

You've probably resolved it by now, but have a look at our "Pointers Extra" on clearing up watchOS 2 installation issues for some tips.
