Im having problems with trying to shut down my machine, it goes through the normal routine fine, but as soon as the power cuts out it starts back up again

Ive gone through the disk utility checks but there are no problems.

I havnt added or deleted any software (that I know of) either.
Can anyone give me some ideas as to where to start looking?

Thanks,
Dan

Try a clean install on your 2nd partition. Or on an external drive, if you didn't bother to set up a 2nd partition for troubleshooting & OS upgrades. If the problem goes away, then it was an OS issue.

Look at Energy Saver Prefpane -> Options tab -> Restart automatically after a power failure

Having this box checked won't cause the behavior you describe without something else being glitched up. But unchecking that option might be a stopgap measure to stop the restarts.

I have had a Logitech wireless mouse, but this was about 6 weeks ago. It was a pita to start off with, had to unplug the dongle every time I woke or started the computer but its fine now.

That was my first thought reader50, unchecked the box and it made no difference.
I have a second drive that I was using as a scratch disc for paintshop, but I upgraded it to a larger size disc for a clean OS install so I could then use the existing as a scratch disc again. (not recent btw)
It will be a matter of course once I get my Leopard disc next week.

I would suggest you remove the upgrade card to see if thats the culprit. Was there a firmware upgrade you had to do? If so, redo that first, then remove it if that didn't work.

I don't mean to sound patronizing, but have you checked that the switch on the front is working as it should? Happened to me once - if it's stuck in, some Macs just start back up again.

I dont really want to be removing the processor if I can help it.
The button is fine, it puts the machine to sleep without any problems, turns it off and on again.

I will be installing a new OS on a new drive soon though, so we will see

Well, ive gone through nearly every possible check

Swapped memory sticks, HD's, clean install on HD, swapped processor, graphics card, even removed the old modem from the board.

Only thing left I can think of is the power supply. Havnt got a spare so will remove it and get my brother to check it out on Monday (he repairs circuit boards) unless anyone has a better idea?

Cheers,
Dan

Hey Dan,

I had the same problem with my powermac g4 and it was driving my crazy trying to find the source. Found out that it was my keyboard usb extension. After ditching it the problem went away. Are you using the keyboard usb extension ?

Well, you were bang on with your diagnosis Mr daybreak

Its all down to the stupid logitech junk again

Ive always used the keyboard extension for the receiver but it hasnt always caused the problem

If I plug it in the back of the machine its fine
If I use the apple mouse in the keyboard extension its fine

My cheapo hub is now dead, so looks like I will need an alternative to the 2 ports as standard
