Sigma has revealed two new high-end mirrorless camera systems, with the interchangeable lens cameras including SA mounts and Foveon X3 image sensors. The sd Quattro is able to capture a 39-megapixel image using a similar APS-C sensor size to the rest of the cameras in the dp Quattro line, while the sd Quattro H opts for a larger APS-H sensor, making it capable of producing larger 51-megapixel photographs.
The Foveon sensors used in both cameras use stacked silicon, with a higher-resolution top layer collecting blue channel data while two lower-resolution layers below pick up red and green channel information. Sigma claims the merged image can produce "incredible image quality" comparable to medium format files. The sensor is paired with the Dual TRUE III image processor, which can merge seven exposures into one dynamic image under "Super-Fine-Detail" mode, with the camera also lacking a low-pass filter for a better image.
Housed in a magnesium alloy body that's splash and dust-proof, the cameras include a two-mode autofocus detection system, using Phase Detection for speed and Contrast Detection for accuracy, with other modes including Movement Prediction, Face Detection, and Focus Peaking. A 2.3-megapixel viewfinder is included, providing close to 100 percent coverage, with the alternative option of a three-inch 1.6 megapixel LCD on the back.
Sigma has yet to reveal when the
sd Quattro and
sd Quattro H will ship, with pricing also unknown.
