LOL, I don't care
By the time Apple contact me, Panther final will be out
The wallpaper is in fact included, along with a graphite version.
There is a new welcome screen, new music, and it's VERY welcoming.
The wallpaper's are more dull instead of bright to match the gray Panther look.
Ask and I'll answer

Yay! Now Panther can be even more drab than before.... Even with as boring of a GUI that OS 9 had, at least the wallapers included were colourful and fun....

They are responding to customer wants.
People really don't want to stare at something gaudy and in your face all day. Something more subtle and easier on the eyes is a tad better for the user environment.

Is the welcome screen the same one that someone posted earlier, the only with the snow like swirling animation?

Want to induce a kernel panic and see what that looks like in Panther?
I haven't really looked at the Panther threads, so I apologize if this has been covered, but what are menu bar apps and haxies like in Panther? That is, will 10.3 be as easy to mod as 10.2?

I've found Aqua (especially 10.2) to be quite subtle and a lot more relaxing of a GUI than the boring Platinum appearance.

Has the icon bug been fixed where applications (helpviewer for instance)
in recent items or folders in
sidebar displays the wrong icon? (7B53)
also I found this one quite fascinating,
note that the version says 0.0.1d1?
It is actually version 1.0 as reported
correctly by 10.2 Finder on multiple Mac's.
Sure hope it is specific to this file only.

I sure hope they fix those widgets too...
Man, that's one reason right there that I can't use Panther. I am REALLY REALLY picky about GUI stuff. I am a Grapic Design Graduate from a local college and detail really stands out for me. I hope they are just waiting until last to fix the GUI problems and inconsistencies. I really hope they completely MAKEOVER the widgets and scroll bars and progress bars... they still look 10.1-ish.
Apple always pulls through...

Could someone post another link to that desktop picture? Spymac seems to have crapped out.
Some major features I'm interested in:
1) Are kernel file notifications in place (try "touch ~/Desktop/test" and see if "test" shows up on your desktop immediately)?
2) Have the reported problems with SMB filesharing been fixed?
3) What archiving/compression options are available? ZIP, CPIO, etc? Any sign of TAR or GZIP?
4) Any sign of real DVD+R support (beyond icons showing up)?
Also, any info on further GUI refinements - including the window widgets, prefpanel layouts (especially "Account Options"), and other applications.
I'll admit to being very sour on Panther at first, but Apple has very pleasantly surprised me at the amount of redesign and refinement. I figured the developer preview was all but frozen interface-wise.

Actually the widgets in 10.3 are fine cept a few oddities that will be fixed by the release.
They are a lot better than the 10.2 ones. I was going to change them, but don't need to now.

1) No. And I doubt they will be in the final. Its almost FC now and I bet this feature was causing issues so they yanked it. I know for a fact that Apple has yanked a few things in Panther as FC comes near because they weren't ready. Expect to see it in a dot release.
2) Works fine for me. I use it pretty heavily too.
3) Zip is all I see
4) Wish I had one to test

Delete the file /Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices.6B.csstore and restart.
Everything should be groovy then. May have to do it a couple of times.

I don't understand why this is such a needed feature. If you need to see it, you would have to click on the Desktop anyways.
There is an api that an app can call to update the Finder, but I don't know how Terminal app can do it. I know there are file systems out there than can monitor for changes, etc.
I guess if I knew the need for it, I could understand the reason for your wanting this feature.

Thanks a lot! Sad to see file notifications aren't going to be ready, but that will keep up my anticipation for 10.3.x.

This is useful because right now you can't just take a quick look at a folder or the desktop and see if the file is there (done downloading, processing, what have you) - you have to click into the Finder and wait for it to update. A real pain when you want to keep on working in whatever frontmost app you're in. Also, I expect kernel notifications of filesystem changes could be very useful for post-processing apps, or programs watching for changes (beyond things like simple folder action scripts).

OK, I can see the usefulness of it. I use command tab from terminal to Finder, release keys and files show up instantaneously.
They have fixed the Desktop pictures system pref pane bug that cause system prefs to crash.

Looking through the bundle, you find the following in Resources/English.lproj/InfoPlist.strings:
CFBundleName = "iTunesXPlugIn";
CFBundleShortVersionString = "iTunesXPlugIn version 0.0.1d1";
CFBundleGetInfoString = "iTunesXPlugIn version 0.0.1d1, Copyright 2000, MyGreatSoftware.";
NSHumanReadableCopyright = "Copyright 2000, MyGreatSoftware.";
... which looks like it was leftover from some sample code in the iTunes Visual Plug-ins SDK, which was leftover by ProjectBuilder, which the author never changed (likewise for the other places you're seeing it).
10.3 must be handling this in a different way than usual, though, because I get the author's intended info (from Info.plist) in 10.2's Get Info window.
For a fun corollary to the web, do a Google search for "Welcome to Adobe GoLive" and see how many people left the default title text in the pages they posted online.

Cheers for the reports kidd0, out of curiosity, do the icons still zoom towards you when double clicked? I'm sure this was broken in the previous build.

Here ya go. It is part way down the page with a list of tons of bugs. I put a report out like this every build. I just didn't get my hands on 59 yet ;-(

In case nobody has mentioned it already (I didn't see it)...under System Preferences/Desktop...Apple has included your iPhoto album folders for you to choose from for desktop pictures...it's a nice little touch and detail!
Also, for so much talk about bluetooth mice and keyboards coming from Apple (and built-into 10.3)...why the heck weren't those part of the new iMac line released today? Especially since they have built-in bluetooth capabilities now?

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned this feature (which has been in since the beginning) - The Text system has autoCompletion built-in.
Try opening Text Edit and type the beginning of a word then press Option-Esc (or f5)

This is a new feature. However, I don't know which build it appeared in first, but it is in 7b59.

Thanks for the welcome, I've been a reader of MacNN for a while.
Some bugs that are fixed or are being fixed for the next build:
Someone on my site reported their system would not goto sleep in 7B53 (not sure if it was a gfx card issue with Panther) but it seems Apple understood it and analyzed the reported bug.
Red X from 7B53 clicked is now graphically fixed.
Quicktime buttons are now more normal instead of dark (from 7B53)
Programs minimized to the dock do not have the option to hide anymore.
I'm dual booting with Jaguar 10.2.8 and Panther 7B59, it's odd: I was on Panther and color seemed fine and perfect, went to Jaguar and now some images like brushed safari metal is now pixel'y.. very odd.

Did you never download files with IE on OS 9? One great feature was that the icon had a 'progress bar' that would update as the file downloaded.

Yes, I used it once or twice. However, the application can make a call to update the Finder, which can be done in OS X by a simple api call. How can Terminal do the same thing without evaluating every statement entered on the command line ? Comparing features of a CLI to a GUI application is like comparing grapes to apples.
