Has anyone gotten the BBCWorld stream to work with Mac OS 10.2.1 and RealOne player beta 2? I never got it to work with the first beta and now since I am using the trial membership for the SuperPass I thought that I would have access. The link is on the right side of the page of www.bbcworld.com.

I am using Internet Explorer 5.2.2 and get a message from BBCWorld saying that I do not have RealOne player installed which I clearly do. The plugin and application works on all of the other sites that I have tried it on, just not this one.

I have emailed BBCWorld asking about this issue and also asking for a direct link just in case that is what is needed.

Thanks!

Richard Lorenc

UPDATE: BBCWorld Support emailed me back saying that the streaming service is only available to continental European users! What!?!? There must just be a URL for the stream...Does anyone have it?

Nope, same problems. I wish it was still on QuickTime, though. *sigh*

Even here in Europe it says that you haven't installed RealOne Player.

I can't check this because I'm cheap and I haven't stumped up for a silverpass, but try this url: http://www.bbcworld.com/content/smil...text_pane.html.

Hope it works for you.

Just thought I'd let everyone know of my success!

Any body know how to get to the free version of the new player?
I folloed the link form VersionTracker but you just end up at the 'please enter your billing infomation' page. WTF I just want to listen to streamed radio, Using the Free Player. If this is the way Real is going, the door is being held open for QT streeming.

For free player, go to http://www.real.com/ then click on the OS X link on the right hand side of the page. Look down, underneath the "NEW PLAYER FEATURES" and you'll see a text link to "Free RealOne Player for Mac OS X". Fill out the form and download. They really don't want you to get it, do they?

Does anyone else subscribe to the European Real SuperPass service and watch the BBC World live stream? By the way, I am now using the final version of RealOne Player for OS X, not any beta version as I was using when I first made this thread.

I have contacted Real support with the following message:

The BBCWorld link from their site (http://www.bbcworld.com) on the left side of the screen simply launches RealOne Player after downloading the .smil link and the window just says "Contacting" with the default screen. It will sit like that for about a minute and then display a message about the connection not being able to be established with a link underneath. It seems as though the link is invalid...

Another way that I used to access the live BBCWorld stream is by this link:

http://www.bbcworld.com/content/smil...text_pane.html

After downloading and launching the "broadband" link on that page a new browser window pops up informing me that the BBCWorld stream is not available for the Macintosh. Is that true? This used to work and is the only reason I am subscribing to the European SuperPass service.

The Channel 4 stream, however, loads a 10 second Channel 4 logo stream and then stops.

Can anyone else reproduce this problem? Is the Mac version of RealOne Player now incompatible with some of the streaming channels?

Thanks,

RL

If you have trouble finding the download link for the free RealOne Player, go here:

I don't have a problem with downloading the software (I've had the final version of it on my machine ever since it came out and have tried re-installing it since having this issue). My problem is with an apparent incompatibility with it, the Mac version, and the live BBC World stream.

Have you checked the proxy settings in RealPlayer (if you use a proxy for the internet)?
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

The proxy settings seem to be fine--I can get any other streaming media to play through the Player. It's just these subscription-based channels from the Beeb.

Thanks.

I looked into this recently and I remember clearly a page telling me in big red letters that I was using a Mac and that the service was not available for Mac. To me this clearly means it doesn't work.

First of all, that sucks and why in the world would this be so?

Secondly, I messed around with a few settings in RealOne Player and while I still cannot get the links from http://www.bbcworld.com/content/smil...text_pane.html to work, I did manage to get a 10-second BBC World logo to play using the link on the right side of the BBC World page. After the 10 seconds were up the "video" just stopped.

Any insight? Can anyone try the links on the page mentioned above on a Windows version of the Player?

Thanks.

I have no idea why but some of the links on the BBC site in Realplayer work on the Mac and others such as those on the "broadband" pages mostly do nothing. When I select them they send that irritating realplayer file to my desktop but they never play. I suspect that the realplayer content is divided into two types on the site. The narrow band ones such as those on the news pages normally work fine on a pc or a mac whereas the more specialised broadband ones work only under windows realplayer. I shall have to try some experimenting to confirm (or not) my theory.

I've noticed that too, but neither of the links on that BBC page ("normal" or "broadband") work on my machine...

You are right about that page but what I meant was that the realplayer (audio or video) files on the normal news pages such as http://news.bbc.co.uk/ play ok. On the other more specialised pages the files are clearly different many having a .smil ending rather than a .ram ending. My mac in fact tries to open the .smil files in Quicktime. They will not however play in either Quicktime or Realplayer.

Right.

I get all of the .ram files to play correctly off of the BBC's page, but now (unlike months ago) none of the .smil files play correctly.

Bah.

Real either needs to update their software for the Mac (preferably, of course) or post notice that some of their RealPass features are not compatible/available with and for the Mac.

They DO have control over what service they use to broadcast. And if my memory serves me correctly, Real is only one out of three. And it is in their best interest if they can be reached by as many people as possible.

This is just another example of the BBC's (odd) pro Windows bias.
At the moment they are doing a large beta-test of a BBC branded download player BBC iMP, this allows you to download and watch any of the programmes broadcast on any of the BBC's (UK) TV channels from the past 7 days. It integrates a Vid player and a BitTorrent like download system. Unfortunately the BBC have decided to use WMP as the core of the Player and encoded the programmes in WMP7 with the full DRM. This means that unless they abandon this direction, and the 'full' rollout uses some radically different tec there is no chance this EVER being available for the Mac. which annoys the hell out of me being a licence payer an all.

BBC iMP FAQ

14. When will I get iMP on Mac & Linux?
We are currently conducting a content trial of iMP with 5,000 users in order to assess audience interest. As this is a trial it has only been possible to develop a version for Windows using Windows Media 9 Digital Rights Management, given time and budget constraints. Should the service be approved, we aim to make it accessible for different platforms, like Macintosh and Linux. Our suppliers are currently working towards this.
