Hi-
Does any software exist, or does the Terminal have the ability to see if people are using my network? I'm running an airport base station in my apartment and have the network Closed at 128 bit WEP. But me speeds are sometimes slow and I feel like it's not just the sites I visit being bogged down, but unwanted visitors borrowing my bandwidth. Any help?

I don't use an AirPort base station (I have a Netgear router) but doesn't AirPort Admin Utility have a space that displays connected users? If not, a quick serach at Versiontracker turned this up...

Also, what type of connection are you on? DSL? Cable? Cable connection split bandwidth between several people (you and your neighbors are a little LAN). So, even if they're not on your AirPort network, they may be using some of your collective bandwidth.

Thanks,
I'm using DSL. I downloaded the Airport Admin Software, but I still don't know where to look to see if other folks ar eon my network. Any other suggestions? The regular airport admin can't tell me anything.

pfft! At 3 Mb/s 24/7, I must have bandwidth to spare.

That's not true on newer cable networks, which are able to guarantee bandwidth to each house. Besides, DSL operates the same way. All those bits get aggregated somewhere upstream.

Unfortunately, having bandwidth to spare does not protect you if someone, without your permission, uses your network and commits a crime. It is one thing to have the RIAA come after you for someone using your network to download copyrighted songs, and quite another for the FBI to come visit you because of someone downloading kiddie porn or stolen credit card numbers through your network. It's always better to protect yourself by protecting your network against unauthorized users.

If your base station is an Airport Extreme, this might help:
