Saw this as well.

As long as it is a 3G/HSDPA version! By the sounds of all that work that O2 is doing to get Edge on their network, I think we may just be getting the US version.

O2 surely must be keen for a 3G version considering the £4billion or so that they spent on their 3G licence from the government.

I am going to hold out buying a Nokia E90 until after this announcement.

Just received an email from Amazon uk asking me to 'preorder your new Apple iPod now'. The new iPod touch 8Gb and 16 GB are both shown as available for pre-order at 169 GBP and 269 GBP respectively.

You have no worries, because it won't be 3G.

Yeah, I don't expect it to be 3G but one can only hope. As 3G is nearly mandatory for a smartphone here in Europe, we can only hope that they release it with 3G here.

However, I am sure that Apple knows that people will still buy it in their droves regardless if it is 3G or not.

Whatever I could care less I just thought the European market would laugh it off the market without it as it seems to be more widespread there.

IMHO I think it will be embarrassing to launch any smartphone in Europe without 3G in 2007. Maybe, just maybe, they will launch a 3G iPhone at this event. As a constant 3G surfer (with my rubbish SE M600i), I really hope so.

What's the deal with the "Mum" thing on the invitation? Some Brit expression?

"Mum's the word" means you aren't allowed to say anything.

For example, if someone tells you a secret and asks you to promise not to talk about it to anyone, you say, "mum's the word."

It probably comes from keeping your lips together, as if you were saying "MMMM".

Apple is using it literally to mean that soon you'll be able to talk, so "mum is no longer the word."

And it is an EDGE phone, sorry 3G lovers. We all want HSDPA, but EDGE is tolerable for checking email, Google Maps. YouTube sucks, but YouTube is silly anyway!

Well I for one will asking my GF to get me an iPhone from the NY Apple Store when she goes there in late October and I'll unlock it to T-Mobile and use that. I really don't give 2 hoots about visual voicemail, I'd prefer to spend far less on my phone contract and on the purchase of the phone.

and they didn't gouge us too bad on the pound/dollar exchange either, only a £69 price increase over the US price, what's that a mere 35% or so?
>:-(

O2 data plan looks not too far off AT&T's US plans for cost though.
