10.5.6 When using certain apps, students (I teach in a lab) hit the delete key and this 'ding' sound responds. I checked under Sys Prefs. Sound Effects...Play User and I have that unchecked.

Where is this sound coming from?

is this happening to everyone? only in those apps?

there are sounds like that in, ahem, transmission (when a torrent is fully downloaded).
sure your students don't have other things going on, like chatting, downloading?

No, the offending computer is right near me. I can hear when he hits a key at certain times. The computers are locked down pretty good.

Any settings I should / can look at?

Isn't it just the system alert sound?
What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

ah, so it's just ONE computer... you could look in these places:

user>home>library>sounds

(harddrive)>library>audio>sounds>alerts

if you find the offending sound...you could delete it...

is it the "bonk" sound when you press a key that doesn't do anything?

Isn't it just your system alert sound going off because you are trying to delete something you can't? Or trying to delete when nothing's selected.

Yeah, don't do that. That's a terrible idea. Plus, it is, as they say, shooting a fly with a howitzer.

Assuming it's the system alert sound, just go to System Preferences->Sound->Sound Effects and turn the Alert volume slider down. Note that the system alert sound is not considered a "sound effect" and is thus unaffected by that checkbox.

Of course, the system alert sound is telling the user that they're doing something wrong, so you may want to begin there.

you can even just get a miniplug (at radioshack for instance), and plug that into the output jack...
