My startup disk is full. I thought I'd move my music library to an external disk to free up some space. How do I do that? Drag and drop is not working.
I'm not sure if I should post this here or in applications since the library is for iTunes.
Thanks

If drag and drop is not working, something is broken.
You should be able to just drag the iTunes folder inside yourhomefolder/Music/ to the external and delete it from your home folder.
If that doesn't work, you've got problems.
Make sure the external drive is Mac-formatted, as Windows-formatted disks either have problems with long filenames/filepaths (FAT32 format) or cannot be written to at all without extra software (NTFS format - Microsoft never publicized the specs for that; install the commercial driver software Paragon NTFS to fully use NTFS volumes on the Mac).

I will try again.
The first times I tried I drug the whole music directory and got error messages about the iTunes directory being locked.

Make sure you QUIT iTunes BEFORE you try any of this.

I'm reformatting the external drive just to make sure it works. What kind of mac os formatting should I use?

SH-thanks for your help.
I tried to use disk utility to erase the external disk to format it as you suggested with no luck. I forget the error message I got. I was able to partition it into two partitions. Not really what I wanted, but it worked. Before I get too far into moving the music over, is there another way to format the whole drive?

Unfortunately, that really depends on the exact wording of the message that you got.
