Hi all,

Until recently I have been looking at an ibook for my mac needs however with the recent improvements i am now leaning heavily towards a powerbook, so my question is (i know ram is important) but how will panther perform with only 256M of RAM? This won't be for an extended time frame, just untill i can afford to upgrade the ram? I can't do this at purchase

Many thanks,

Matt

256MB will run many programs fine. My wife actually did quite a bit of photoshop and illustrator design work on a 1.0Ghz 15" Alum with 256MB for a while unti l igot her 1.0Gb of memory.

Yes the difference was noticable (very noticable). But it's a good stepping stone until you can afford better ram.

PS maybe consider ordering from Expercom who gives free 256MB or 512MB without rebate hassels.

For most applications, 256 will function. If you are writing papers, surfing, messaging, e mailing, and doing light photoshop, you can get by for the time being. If you load in a ram hungry program, like iPhoto with 5000 5M pixel photos, your computer will grind to a crawl. Right now, a 512M stick is about $100.

And on a complete tangent, mike one, your sig is upside down.

Panther runs just fine on my 300 mhz g3 orange clamshell ibook with 186 megs of ram.

Just use it for internet/email/word processing, but usually am running about 5 applications at once on it, just fine.

Old saying "you can never have enough RAM". There is a reason for this.
