Apple has expanded its Back to School promotion into Europe, two weeks after the program for educational customers launched in the United States. Just as with the offer in the US, customers in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and other European markets can get a free pair of wireless Beats headphones as part of a qualifying order, alongside a discounted selection of Mac, MacBook, and iOS devices.

The sale follows a similar pattern to the United States in terms of what is offered. For example, anyone getting an eligible iMac, MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air or Mac Pro will get a pair of Beats Solo2 Wireless Headphones in their choice of color. Those going for an iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, the Plus versions of each, or an iPad Pro will be able to get the Powerbeats 2 Wireless Headphones for free, or can opt to pay an extra fee to upgrade to the the Beats Solo2 instead.

Running until September 5, the offer is available through Apple Store retail locations, as well as the online store for education. Like the US offer, customers wanting to take part must be a student enrolled on a higher education course in college or university.

Free headphones can't make up for the fact that European schools and students would be fools to buy any of the Macs on that list. None are easy to fix. None are easy to upgrade. None will allow a school or studentl, faced with budget issues, to do their own repairs. Imagine buying a car that has the hood welded shut and almost no replaceable parts, not even the battery. That's today's Apple. Macs used to be better but cost more. Now they just cost more. Even worse, there's no evidence that Apple cares enough to create budget line of practical desktops and laptops like they have the iPhone SE. The iPhone SE does illustrate that, if Apple chooses, its engineers can still create products that make sense to people with good financial sense. What Apple needs is a component desktop with Drobo-like adaptability and upgradability. Businesses and design professionals would love it. What Apple needs is a laptop as well-engineered at the white MacBook that I still use as a writer.
