The new MB(P)s are here and the latest rumors were pretty accurate.

• glas trackpad is there
• GeForce 9400M is there plus a 9600M GT (256/512 MB GDDR 3) on the Pro
• 5h of battery life on the 9400, 4h on the 9600
• DisplayPort (although mini)
• battery indicator on the side
• SSD option, disk beneath the battery
• 0.95" thin
• shipping today, in stores tomorrow

(Steve actually mentioned that the leak last night was correct)

So there is no matte screen option? Groan, the glossy screens are horrible.

The new MacBook Air looks like the previous model, but now comes with a Mini Display Port. Available in early November.

Looks like those brick rumors were right on the money. What we weren't told is that it's not new. It's just the MBA manufacturing process now applied to the MBs and MBPs.

First if all boooo for the non glossy screen. What were they thinking. Everyone working on the design field will hate it.

Other than that how powerful are these new graphic chips? Can they work as a SLI setup or is the low powered graphic chip turned off and the higher one turn on when the workload is higher?

Q & A Session

Q: No Blu-ray, and display port -- why no HDMI?
Steve: HDMI is limited in resolution. Phil: for typical computer use, display port is the connector of the future.

Q: Blu-ray?
Steve: "Blu-ray is just a bag of hurt. It's great to watch the movies, but the licensing of the tech is so complex, we're waiting till things settle down and Blu-ray takes off in the marketplace."
Phil: "We have the best HD movie and TV options in iTunes."

Q: What's up with the 17-inch?
Tim: It's being refreshed today as well.

Q: Concern about the glossy screens. Are you going to offer another option?
Steve: We're going all glass -- we won't offer another version. Phil: You offset the reflection by the brightness, and consumers love it. One of the great things about a notebook is you can turn it however you want! insert marketing BS alert here

Q: Are we going to see a netbook?
Steve: In terms of netbooks, that's a nascent market that's just getting started.

Q: You've put a lot of work into the new touchpad, do touchscreens not make sense?
Steve: so far it hasn't made a lot of sense to us.

According to Apple's MBP spec page:

2GB (two 1GB SO-DIMMs) or 4GB (two 2GB SO-DIMMs) of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM; two SO-DIMM slots support up to 4GB

I guess the new design is alright, it’s just that it had to go up against the best looking computer ever created — and as such it falls a bit short in comparison (in my eyes).

The technical aspects are intriguing however, particularly the dual-GPU architecture in combination with Snow Leopard.
I will probably buy a 17" Rev B model once my 17" 2.33 MBP dies. The only gripe with my current MBP is really just the 3 GB RAM limit.

Although who knows what happens when Larrabee makes it’s appearance…

I like that they managed to shave another 1/2 pound off the MacBook, too. I was thinking that I'd eventually replace my Late 2007 BlackBook with a combination of iMac + MacBook Air, but I may end up going with MacBook + new 24" display. Eventually.

The MacBook looks pretty enticing, but I wonder why they haven't shaved off any weight from the ProBook?

No Firewire on the MacBook. Dammit!

OTOH, the new MacBook is much lighter than before.

Ordered the 2.8 / 7200 rpm 320 GB option.

I guess 2GB of ram has never got in the way so 4 and a much faster CPU/GPU than my current 2.0 should be fine.

I guess the spare battery is now going to be huge, strange it is not an order option yet...

Darn, I was waiting for an 8GB ram ceiling. I'm thinking these machines probably support 8GB because Apple often will state a lower RAM ceiling in the specs if they can't supply the modules to fill it all the way up.

Maybe I'm missing something, but if the new Macbooks are doing away with FireWire, how are people going to migrate their settings and programs to and from these new laptops?

Educational pricing:

White 2.1 GHz MacBook with 2 GB RAM = CAD$1174
Video adapters are $19 each

Alu 2.0 GHz MacBook with 2 GB RAM = CAD$1349
(No Firewire, but has backlit keyboard, and is much lighter.)
Video adapters are $34 each

Refurbs cost way too much compared to this edu pricing.

I was wondering myself.

I suppose if Apple was satisfied with the MacBook Air's migration, they're duplicating it on the MacBook now.

No Firewire on the new MacBooks means no Target Disk mode. That sucks!! Also, how am I suppose to import footage from my Canon HV20 into iMovie?

I'm still considering getting the white.

I have a miniDV camera too and like having target mode. However, the other features of the new MacBook are very enticing.

Still no support for 8GB?

They axed the student discount in half, too. $1899 vs 1799 for the old one. And NO gloss on any of the computers anymore? Psh.

Apple's lost it's mind. They effectively raised the price of entry for the notebooks to 1299 too. Grr.

No they didn't. They dropped the price of entry for the notebooks to $999, and that includes a SuperDrive too.

Nice conference, Pro model really stands out from the MacBook model now with its two GPU's.

I like the trackpad idea, very impressive.

I'm just not a massive fan of the design. But then i'll wait and see what they look like in stores. Be interesting to use the new trackpad.

Thought there might be the rise to 8GB RAM ceiling. But didn't happen.
MacBook Pro 17" 2.2 GHz quad-core, 2x4GB 1333MHz RAM, 750GB Hard Drive, Intel HD Graphics 3000,

MacBook Air 13" 1.7 GHz dual-core Intel i5, 4GB RAM, 128GB Flash Storage, Intel HD Graphics 3000, Mid 2011

Yeah, I think I'll have to test it out in-store before I make any decisions this time.

Anyways, I'm glad I sold my two-year old MacBook with no warranty for $750 not so long ago. This way a whole new MacBook for the price of Applecare.

P.S. I'm quite amused that there still is no Blu-ray, in a way.

A bit of an disappointment - no sub $800 MacBook, the lowest MacBook still is in the white shell, and is roughly $200 more than I'm going to spend on a new laptop.

I'll just stay with my white MacBook until it dies, or wait until I get a better offer for another laptop (Windows based thingy with minimum 4 hours of battery time, and a higher resolution than 1440 x 900 - at the moment my current MacBook isn't leaving the house (ok, as I write this, it's cracked palmrest is being changed at a service centre), so it's not been moved around much, just used for a bit of couch surfing).

At the moment, a new MacBook is still too expensive for me
The gene pool needs cleaning - I'll be the chlorine.

Interesting, I was looking for the little rubber stoppers near the iSight and it now looks like they have gone with a full circumference o-ring like feature. While this is going to be nice for several reasons, it will make cleaning the screen a bit interesting as it might collect lint and catch the cloth...

The only good thing about the new MBP is the case which will save the world from Al Gore's imaginary vision of the future.

Technically USB Target Disk Mode would require an update of the firmware, not the OS. </nitpick>

But due to USB's host-dependence I have my doubts it's as straightforward to pull off as FW TDM.

Recent rumors have indicated the 17" will be phased out.

In the Q&A Tim Cook said they refreshed the 17" today, but from what I can tell they're simply keeping the old 17" around. They did add a bigger disk though.
