So I downloaded an AVI file and now I was wondering what was the best way of opening it. Quicktime makes it a audio file, DiVX Doctor II doesn't even see it, VLC doesn't either... So... what am I missing... ??

There is no need for DivX Doctoring anymore with this latest DivX version
http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/beta/

Since the latest beta of divx I don't use Mplayer anymore but I keep it around for kicks

After installing 5.0.6 beta, and rebooting, Quicktime tells me when trying to open the file that there is an error in the program... that's all that it says....
Argh...

I think there must be something wrong with the Avi file if VLC can open it. And as you seemed to tryed every other program, I'd suggest that you try and download the file again as it may be corrupt.

mplayer playes some/all of the Indeo formats, or so I am told.
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

If Mplayer nor VLC can't play that files which is a rarity then the files is fooked. It happens sometimes with these p2p programs.

the ffmpeg people are working on Indeo 3; I don't think it's finished yet (kind of like how WMV2 is listed as supported, but whenever you get to a point in a WMV2 file that uses technology that distinquishes WMV2 from WMV1, the picture gets corrupted). Anyway, I've never even seen an Indeo 3 file, just 5 and occaissionally 4, and the three versions are not backwards or forwards compatible, which implies that they are not related in a meaningful way. So don't expect any useful support of Indeo soon. but you never know

VLC should play it, if not, trash the file or stick it in VPC.
