External Hard Drive help please.

Hey, I recently bought a WesternDigital 320 GB external HD. I bought this so I can store large video files such as home videos and movies. The problem is everytime i drag the file from my iMac HD to the external HD it goes for a while but then an error (error- 1309) comes up. This has me pretty angry because the whole pupose of me buying this hard drive is to store large videos and these files are the only ones I am having a problem transfering. I would much appretiate anyones help. Thanks very much in advance.

Check the format of the hard drive. If it's formatted as FAT32, there's a 4 gig file size limit, which would give you that error. Go into disk utility and reformat it as HFS+ and you should be good to go.

Wrong forum, but I'll try and help. Did you format the HDD before using it? According to Sandisk and Maxtor, they use a simple tool that just writes a new parittion table. The device will become corrupted or may not work at all if you use it straight out of the box, so you should format it first before using it.
Also, if it's USB, make sure you plug it directly into the computer and not through a hub or your keyboard.

Yep - most likely this is a FAT32 drive, which has a (iirc) 4gb filesize limit. Format it for HFS+ (you will no longer be able to use it on Windows machines after this), and you'll be fine. Go to disk utility, select 'erase' and then format.

Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive)
MS-DOS File System (which is what is highlightedto be chosen automatically)
UNIX File System
Which one should I choose?

Well, you can use HFS+ on windoze but you'll need the commercial MacDrive program. But it does work.

Just tested this and successfully transfered a 7 GB movie file. Thanks everyone for there help. I have been sitting on this problem for about a month and did nothing about it until today and everyone made it easy. Thanks again.
