My Hopper story is how David Lynch originally wrote the Frank Booth character as carrying around a tank of helium. Hopper talked to Lynch about it, and citing personal knowledge, suggested nitrous would make more sense. Lynch agreed.
In hindsight, Hopper said that was a big mistake. It would have been way scarier to have had Booth inhaling helium.

That blows. That guy was pretty cool. I liked how the Gorillaz got him in the last album, with the island of monkey. He seemed to always do weird, interesting, off the wall shit.

Thanks to your post I watched Blue Velvet this afternoon. 
But it was hard for me to tell just what Frank was huffing.
