Somewhere, Steve is smiling with smugness.

Adobe kills mobile Flash, giving Steve Jobs the last laugh.

Adobe's an old slug spiralling down. I had read their quarterly report a few months back and saw the writing on the wall. They were down operating income wise a lot year-over-year.

Not saying they're dead, but they remind me of RIM. An old dog, fading...

That's phooey. Or is it? The only products that I can see will help Adobe in the long term are Acrobat and InDesign. How many competitors does Dreamweaver have? Inkwell works better than Illustrator to me and is free. I don't know how many Photoshop-like applications there are, but a lot of them have been on the App store for a while. Apple's Motion competes with After Effects and costs $50. If Quark would actually compete with InDesign by bringing the price down by five hundred bucks, they would own that market again. That leaves Acrobat and PDF. Not a lot there to bank on. I smell blood, do you?

Photoshop is still the best app in its category. Check out the demo they gave of the upcoming 'unblur' feature if you haven't seen it, its pretty awesome.
Despite this however, the majority of people who have Photoshop don't pay for it, but also don't use it to the full extent of its powers. Its amazing how many people can't name the extra features you get from upgrading from say version 7 to CS5. I can't name all that many. The newer features are getting more and more specialised. No doubt Freudling will disagree strenuously with this.

What it does have going for it is its name. I can't tell you how many times when selling a Mac to a switcher they would ask if PS came with it, get annoyed when it didn't, then turn their nose up at the idea of PS Elements because it 'wasn't the full version', even though these were people who would struggle to turn a computer on without help as often as not. Its very much like Office in that respect. Its a very strong brand which no longer deserves the strength since its competitors have pretty much caught up where it counts.

Its nice to Steve proved right again though.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Acrobat and InDesign: not sure
Photoshop/Illustrator: cash cows
Dreamweaver: some people still like it, but in the generation of CMSes I would say this product is dying too, relative to the other options out there and the market size. Just a guess though.
Flash: also a niche product

Before we all get too smug, Safari 5.1 still has an annoying conflict with forums like this one, so it refused to render the pictures, so I had to open it in Chrome.

So mods, which sub-forum are you going to move this thread to?

I haven't decided.

All those pretty magazine apps on the iPad are done using the Adobe Digital Publishing Platform: ie, InDesign.

Print design is on the decline but not going away anytime soon. InDesign is still an important tool.

That said, Adobe sells everything bundled now, so it's hard to say just how important any individual element is to the whole package. I doubt anyone out there just buys InDesign.

Not having to deal with Quark's licensing or tech support is reason enough to use InDesign.

Quark is seriously the worst company ever.

They choked on their own arrogance and Adobe snuck up and drank their milkshake.

Quark is dead in the water.

To me Adobe sounds like Microsoft: they have very strong cash cows, but they have failed to read the currents and profit from future developments (e. g. by seeing what HTML5 + iPhone-type smartphones would mean for their customers). Quite the contrary, they have fought with nails and teeth to keep Flash in the game.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

Quark is still around? I honestly thought they were dead and gone. I'm a daily "Holy Trinity" user (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign). Can't imagine trying to learn any other applications for what I do. I know these 3 too well and have invested too many years in them to switch.

Flash can burn in hell for all I care.

imo, adobe needs to make dreamweaver easier to use...from a designer's point of view

then add html-5 stuff and it's gold Jerry!

It would not be close to gold with this change in direction, with all due respect.

The day has long passed where designers using a WYSIWYG can produce an acceptable web page or web site that is up to the professional standards that Dreamweaver markets itself as being suited for. A WYSIWYG editor can be great for mockups and amateur sites, and those definitely have their uses and value, but that's about it, and I'm assuming that by "a designer's point of view" this is what you have in mind.

The professionals that use Dreamweaver use it as a text editor, and some say it is great at that. As a text editor, there are no "html5 features" that need to be added aside from maybe code completion which is probably pretty trivial (although I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "html5 features" and for that matter I usually don't know what anybody means by this the way this is often spoken about).

I know this sounds elitist and stuff, but really, since attention turned towards content management and so-called Web 2.0 stuff a lot of conventions have changed that some people haven't really clued into yet. Unless Dreamweaver intends to make it as a text editor with the ability to cater to designers for special case scenarios, as a professional tool it also has a nebulous future.

The general theme with Adobe seems to be that so much stuff has passed them by internet wise in particular, they seem to operate like it's still the late 90s or early 2000s.

Had have to deal with Quark in the past. Had wonderful fights with tech support and phone reps—that could be because I'm a idiot. However, their product essentially does what InDesign does. It was a thought. Not a good one obviously.
