I got an update for Growl that seemed to appear from no where, I did not even think I was using Growl on the system anywhere.

Does it come as part of 10.5 these days or am i missing something?

No, Growl does not come with 10.5 these days.

Some third-party applications that use it include a Growl installer. I have been asked whether I want to install it a few times. Maybe you involuntarily agreed to that once. Or some sneaky third-party application installed it behind your back.

Adium installs it, but it asks permission before doing so. Alot of other apps do the same as well.

Aye, Adium was the first one that came to mind when wondering what Apps ask to install it. I know Vienna leverages it, but I don't recall Growl being a part of the installation process.

I can't say for sure but I don't recall Xcode having that in the install process.
