I've historically used a Macbook Pro for work and my iMac for my home media apps (iTunes / iPhoto).

I want to move the iMac to the kid's area so they can use it and transition to using my MacBook pro as my primary machine. Here is the problem: The iMac has a 1TB disk, and the MBP has s 256GB SSD. I have about 110GB free on it. My iTunes library alone is 168GB, my iPhoto library is another 93GB.

Obviously this isn't going to fit on my local SSD. I'm thinking external media may have to come into play here. I also can't be the first person to run into this problem.

- How have the rest of you approached this? Did you move your entire library to an external drive, or just the media while leaving the catalogs on the local disk?
- If you went to an external drive, what happens if you try and start iTunes or iPhoto without the drive mounted?

Just looking for how the rest of you approached this.
