Ah, I just heard about it. Hope I didn't pull a n00b and missed it posted here already. Not sure why they put in the FAQ not Mac compatible. Once you are downstream of their equipment off a router/switch on DHCP, any computer type will work.

Plans in Japan are regularly above 30Mbs. Unbelievably fast. That's faster than our entire campus network.

Just today I called speakeasy.net to get their DSL at my new apartment. It may not be cheap, nor as fast as Verizon or Comcast, but it should be more reliable, and they don't forbid you from running a server, they help you do it. They encourage you to share your connection with neighbors (they'll even split the billing for you ). Mind you, if I need super-high-speed for big downloads, I can just go to school and plug into their ethernet and use their 622Mbit connection to the net (they also have numerous other connections, including a speedy link to Internet2).

So how does it work? Is it just a faster DSL?

Man does England suck, I pay 25 ($45) a month just for 512k. I can't even get 1mbps here because I'm 'out of range', even though I live in a densely populated area. I blame the communists.

i just phoned verizon now and i was told it is only in [someplace], texas.
i asked about the tampa/clearwater, florida area and he said they are busy testing it there but all 100 spots are gone.

told me to keep calling back to check if i can get into the test when they free up spots.

If the PR is right, it's an actual fiber connection going right into your home.

True, the service is very limited right now and that MSN crap isn't Mac compatible, but Verizon does have a Mac support group. Don't know if they're supporting FIOS on Mac, though. In light of this news,SBC has decided to roll out their FTTN (Fiber-to-the-neighborood) plan in 2 years instead of 5. I can no longer get their DSL since I moved (and they didn't bother to tell me), so they'd better get this thing smokin' fast.

So do I.

ON TOPIC: I have a 3MB connection for US$40

I really do not need a faster connection. Seriously.

I've known about this for some time. It's not going to be around in this area for at least another few years. I'd love to have the 30/5 package. I've been fairly happy with my Verizon DSL.

I'm stuck with 4Mbps at home. But at work, I have to suffer with OC-48 (2.4Gbps)

4 is okay, but it is night and day difference coming home.
