I will go to this one one opening day with high expectations again, but I am realizing that they aren't going to be as high as last time.

I take it all back! I saw it last night and it really was truly incredible. The design, the story, the animation, the humor etc... it was all perfect. I think it was 10x better than toy story, 5x better than Nemo, and 2x better than Shrek. Definitely the best animated kiddy movie I've ever seen. Pixar has finally done it!

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

Today's been a good day.

Went to the Jordan Creek Apple Store opening (got me a free T-shirt!), and then on to an 11:30 showing of The Incredibles. Which, by the way, is indeed a kick-butt movie. Woo!

Just got back from seeing it in Digital. This Movie was GREAT!!!!! It was like a classic old style 50's type movie/story but with modern touches. Definiteily worth seeing.

Ya the movie was very very cool. The whole thing looked like it was stuck in some campy 60's bond movie. I loved it.

Excellent movie! One of the top movies of this year. Definitely better than Finding Nemo.

BTW, it was interesting to see the credits including a blurb about Intel CPUs at the end. Heh.

The movie was good. It had a distinct, atypical message, a solid story, was entertaining and funny, and was impressively animated. The animation was so flowing and natural, I found myself forgetting it was a computer animated movie at times. As for the commercialistic comments-- why pin that on this movie in particular? I see no particular reason why anyone would consider this movie more commercialistic or whatnot than any other cartoon film.

I find Pixar's films different, creative and driven by something real. Of course there are monetary concerns and contracts to fulfill, but within that there's a team of creative, passionate writers and animators making things happen. I definitely recommend the film.

What Gabriel Morales said ^.

I really loved the soundtrack. I'm a sucker for that Mancini/Barry-esque 60s music, and I'll purchase this one (though it seems it's not on the iTMS, yet).

All the vocal work was strong, especially Holly Hunter, Jason Lee, and Spencer Fox (Dash).

Favorite little scenes (for now)-no spoilers:

The bank robbery scene with "Bomb Voyage".

The culmination of Bob and Lucius' "bowling night."

The family's "strike the pose" moment.

Any scene with Edna Mode.

Tremendous flick.
I am stupidest when I try to be funny.

Thanks for the links. Unfortunately, those are for the "Remix EP" not the film's score.

Forecasts of the opening gross are around $70 million, right about the same amoung for Finding Nemo. That would put it behind Shrek 2, Harry Potter, Spiderman 2, and The Passion of the Christ for this year's highest opening w/e grosses.

I'm sure having the Star Wars: Episode III trailer can't hurt either. Brilliant marketing. Both sides benefit. Jobs gets people who want to see the trailer, and Lucas gets the bazillion people going to see The Incredibles.

I wonder whatever happened to Brad Bird's Iron Giant. The reviews of the movie were very good, but it bombed at the box office. It cost $70 million to make, and made only $23 million. I do remember the marketing for it was terrible though. I'll definitely look into the Special Edition DVD coming out next week.

BTW, in the theatre I was in, the response to the trailer for The Cars was almost universally "Meh". I really hope for Pixar's sake they can come up with something better even just for the trailer. It truly sucked.

Good flick. A little heavy on the explosions for my taste, but it's a superhero flick, so whaddaya gonna do.

"Edna Mode" (voiced by Brad Bird) = Edith Head

Mr. Incredible's government "handler" looked a lot to me like Abe Vigoda.

To me she looked like Dr. Evil's female sidekick from Austin Powers. Nonetheless, I planned to buy this on DVD sight-unseen. But since I did get to see it theatrically, definitely a keeper.

So so reviews? It's one of the top reviewed major release movies of this year.

BTW, the best reviewed movie of 2004 is Dr. Strangelove. (It has been released again this year.)

Surprisingly, it did get some strangely bad reviews from some quarters; but now that it's out in general release, it's proving to be the opposite.

Links to the reviews? Most of the early reviews I saw were positive. There were several that said it was good but not great, or even just OK, but that's reasonable. There were very few that I have seen that gave it a thumbs down.

BTW, did you work on the movie?

Fantastic! Production design was incredible - the whole retro-future thing makes it completely timeless, like something out of Disney World's Tomorrowland - hey, there's even a monorail!

Rendering was amazing - fire, water, fabric were all orders of magnitude better than the previous films.

Voices were great, I couldn't envision anybody but Craig T. Nelson playing this part. And Jason Lee was a tremendous villain.

So glad it wasn't a whole fat-guy-in-a-skinny-costume movie either - they didn't even have that scene in the movie! Yay!! No stupid pop-culture references like the ones that made me cringe in Shrek 2, no stupid one-liners. Genuinely funny action, and very exciting parts too. The chase scene through the jungle was one of the better chases I've ever seen.

The music was fantastic - I'm a trumpet player so I laughed out loud at every screaming horn riff. I enjoyed every minute - can't wait for the soundtrack, this Tuesday maybe?

Computer animated movie superheroes "The Incredibles" topped domestic box office charts over the weekend, raking in $70.7 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday.

Yeah. i kinda noticed the pop-culture references and one-lines, in Shrek 2 and Shaark Tale... very cliche. SO bloody annoying..... it's like they threw them into the movie during editing. No love...no love whatsoever.

We read a few 'comments' by some people in the media that kinda put a sour note on things, mainly just trying to burst the bubble on what the movie was like compared to others on release just now.

I'm really glad that virtually most reviewers, and the audience are liking it, was a lot of fun to make.
BTW, did you work on the movie?

Yup, I work there, and worked on this, but taking a break just now, travelling around the UK.

I heard this reported on NPR/Market Place this morning. The announcer said of Pixar and the opening "...making this the studio's second biggest weekend opening since it released Shrek 2."

Cool. Congrats on the great movie.

So, since you're on a Mac forum... how much were Macs used? I know Renderman Pro Server is on OS X, but the Artists tools are not, and the main renderfarm is Intel (hence the Intel CPU credit at the end of the movie).

For workstations, is any of the 3D stuff being done on Macs now, or are Macs still strictly 2D stuff?

Just wondering.

anybody take kids to it? how young? are there really scary parts (a la weird glowfish from Nemo, etc.)

My 2 1/2 yr old loves other Pixar fare, but there are parts in each movie that he was scared at the first couple times. He was mesmerized by the trailer. (heck, he was also mesmerized by the Cars trailer, so what does that tell you?)

I took my 4 year old daughter, and she loved it. There aren't any really scary parts per se, but that of course is subjective from child to child. When my wife is back in town in a couple of weeks, we'll probably go again, as she wants to see it also.

Heheh, my GF jumped several times during the movie. Mind you, the kids in front of us seemed less jumpy than she was.

I'd say there are a few startling parts, but it's less scary than Finding Nemo.

Yeah, most of the audience didn't seem to care for the trailer to The Cars, but there were a couple of giggling kids. I just hope that movie doesn't end up being totally aimed at kids. The key to Pixar's success in previous movies was their movies' accessibility to all age groups. But I won't prejudge...

BTW, my pre-teen nephew and his friends saw The Incredibles and loved it too. They had originally wanted to go see Team America: World Police, but didn't because of the alleged "disturbing puppet sex". I guess the parents intervened...

Yeah, we've been moving onto OS X in a big way over the last couple of years, more-so in the last 18 months. Pretty much always had Macs for illustration work, drafts, storyboards etc; but with OS X we did some major tests with HD video in which the outcome was pretty good. Now we develop on OS X, we have a number of our proprietary tools running on it. We've got it really well integrated into our workflow and I think things will only get better as they go on.

Like ILM, we've been big Unix users, and although we relied on Sun, and SGI for many years, their days were numbered. So there was a time when we, like other large studios, incorporad Linux, and Windows. But, now with OS X, we can get back to a version of Unix geared for media production, combined with the Mac look and feel, and a powerful variant of Unix allowing us to do everything, plus more, that we did in the old Sun/SGi days.

Dayum, I sound like a marketing brochure above, lol.

--- WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS BELOW ---

The film is rated PG because of "action violence" -- I think it's the first Pixar film to get that rating. Most kids will have no problem with it, but a 2 1/2 year old? I might think twice. The violence is cartoon or videogame violence in that you never see any blood though.

There's one sequence in which fighter-jet pilots try to machine-gun the Incredible kids to death. Many of those fighter pilots die in loud explosions. In another sequence someone is killed by being sucked into a jet engine (although it cuts away just beforehand so you don't see it actually happening). And there's also a scene where an occupied plane is chased and eventually destroyed by guided missiles.

It would vary from kid to kid, but some small children would be scared by this movie, more so than "Finding Nemo." Also we were in a theater with high-end THX audio, and my ears were ringing as we left the theater. It's a loud movie.

I'm not trying to diss the film because of its violence. It's a good film. But parents shouldn't go in expecting "A Bug's Life."

just saw it last nite and it was great. the animation was incredible, it was funny my friend said "they did a good job of mixing animation with real life" he was amazed to find out that it was all cg. either way the plot was just as good as the graphics and the sound effects and music were spectacular. best new movie i've seen in a while.

Oh yeah, the short! I loved the short at the beginning of the film... Boundin' - it had such a nice message to it! The audience applauded after it was finished.

NOT impressed with the Cars trailer. Hopefully it's just a very early concept, but toy racecars and a junker towtruck that says "dag-gum" or whatever was just not appealing. That and the strobe-cut to the racetrack made me roll my eyes. Hope they have some serious improvements by next year.

Very cool. Nice to see OS X making inroads here. Perhaps the next renderfarm will be Xserve based, too.

My take on the short: Meh.

It was too saccharine. It was just so darn cutesy-wootsey that I wanted to throwey upey. Their worst short ever, IMO.

I thought it was almost too cute too, but enjoyed it anyways.

Mind you nothing tops the original Luxo Jr. short. The first time I saw that (back in the 80s), I was floored. I saw it along side a whole bunch of other shorts, and it's only one I remember at all. It was simply amazing, not just because of the jawdroppingly beautiful animation, but because one could "feel" the emotions of the characters, despite their being just lamps.

Saw it last night too, fantastic. As far as the "Cars" trailer, did anyone of you own "putt putt goes to the race" video game by humongous? All I can think is pixar MUST have licensed some rights here, it is almost identicle down to the "dadgum" and the redneck tow truck.
The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away

There a bazillion talking car characters out there, and I can honestly say I've never heard of "putt putt goes to the race".
