A very interesting piece on the founders of Google. I personally rarely use that particular search engine, but those guys have blown up just the same. It never occured to me that a search engine could make someone incredibly wealthy. Having some 3k employees, looks like most of the cool jobs are in Cali.

But what impressed me the most, was that huge plasma screen they had displaying a rotating earth. Anywhere in the world someone used Google, their location would show up on the globe in real-time. That was very sci-fi and futuristic looking, almost unbelievable.

I'd love to see that. And what search engine do you use if not google? Just curious.

cool...however that demo about being on the streets and looking for a pharmacy. She googled in her cell phone and got back an instant email telling her that she was 2 blocks away from the nearest one...isn't that available already?

Actually, that rotating globe was very 'X-Men' looking. Remember in X2 when Picard--er, Xaiver was using the biodome thingy to locate the mutants world-over. Well, each real-time Google hit showed up on the earth as a 3d-ish shaft of light that extended up from it's location into space. Unreal. Then again they could have been pulling Leslie Stahl's chain.

I pretty much use Altavista for my searches. I remember hearing something about Google spyware on the Mac. That may not be true, but scared me off nonetheless. Anyways, here's a link to the story. There's also a video icon that I couldn't get to work. Maybe someone DVR'd this and could post pics of that virtual rotating planet.

I find it hard to believe that Google has more money then GM and Ford Motors, probably true, but it still puzzles me, who does all the cash come from? I guess from companies like GM and Ford and others..who pay google for premium search results.

Yes. And I also hand-crank my own ice cream. The two young co-founders are worth at least 6 Bil apiece, BTW.

It was good in those days, when it was a DEC research project. Then it got bought out and got heavily commercialized. For a while they were foing their updates every 3 months. Sad.

That was a pretty cool piece (also, that "most beautiful woman" piece was also on that night). I like the vision of one of them where someone would be able to walk into a grocery store, scan the UPC of a product, and get back the prices of that product from all the other stores in a specified area.

THAT, would be some powerful tool....

I do however, think the GLAT is a pretty lame way to filter candidates. While it is only the first step, anything like that would potentially filter out a great talent. Then again, I would never be able to answer those questions... so maybe I just don't understand.

That'd make a cool customizable screensaver.

You could set it to all sorts of variables.
