I went to see it last Friday, and I thought it was spectacularly good, even if a bit dark for a Star Wars movie. Unlike the prequels it actually ties in very well with Episodes 4–6, and explains a bit why things are the way they are. (I'm being purposefully vague so as to not spoil anything.) The robot is great, although he is more like HK-47 rather than 3CPO …
Highly recommended!

I really enjoyed it as well. My family was surprised by the ending whereas I was not. But I suppose I'm more well versed in the overall story arc of Star Wars.

Pretty disappointed. Suspension of disbeief and all, but
when they had manually controlled retrieval of a computer-indexed DATASETTE that had to be transferred to a separate reader device to be then uploaded, and this reader unit was BUILT INTO THE ****ING ANTENNA ASSEMBLY…
my inner kid, which really, really wanted to enjoy the movie just went "**** it, this is stupid", packed up its shit and went home. Leaving me to sit through the rest of the movie until the end credits.
I agree it dovetails nicely into both the prequels, which i will never ever watch again, and the actual Star Wars movies. But I've internally said farewell to what Star Wars really stood for, with this movie. Endless boring space battles like in the prequels, that eventually just have you go "oh yeah?" rather than keeping you on the edge of your seat...just like the prequels.
Pity. I had high hopes, after Episode VII thoroughly convinced me.
Maybe Episode VIII will at least manage to not be annoying.

That was an Imperial DF8-4000 antenna assembly. The F8 series all have inbuilt data readers, and the 4000 model is top of the range. A little basic research into Imperial communication methods and you wouldn't have wasted the rest of the movie wondering about it.
I love that you buy the space battles, the Jedi, the aliens, etc, but the data reader? ONE STEP TOO FAR, GUYS!

No, I'm fine with the mystical aspects of Star Wars. Aliens and space battles are just the sci-fi version of cowboys & Indians - which I think is why the ridiculously overloaded battle scenes get so boring, as in this film. Yeah, the blind guy was a little over the top, but he sets the stage for Luke's indoctrination in Ep IV.
But stuff that feels like it is added in gratuitously just to get a good spin-off gaming franchise like that
stupid hand-driven file selection (and the pointless choppy-chop skylight sphincter)
really annoy me.
And the antenna bit was just so mindbogglingly stupid that I just flipped into overload, after being put off and annoyed by the stupid script construction in the data archive.
I was okay with the movie up to that point.

I'm a little surprised that you were so taken out of the story by
the “tape library” bit. Yes, it is a bit strange, but then so is having to carry “floppy drives”, e. g. to insert them into droids to transfer data. However, to me that fits the Star Wars universe just like physical buttons belong to The Original Series in Star Trek. Ditto for moving data links (e. g. when droids connect to a ship or space station (such as the Death Star), their “connector rod” rotates. Serves no function as far as I can tell, but if it weren't rotating, the scene would miss some depth.

The physical aspect of storage and needing to be moved somewhere else for uplinking didn't bother me.
The
having-to-move-highly-complex-retrieval-tools-by-hand-remote
was a jarringly stupid gratuitous plot device. But even that would have been okay.
But
having an upload link port and antenna remote built into a gantry at the OUTSIDE of the top of the archive tower
was just a "**** this idiocy" moment. Just completely killed it for me.
So much so that I even forgot how utterly awesome
Darth Vader was in the following scenes leading up to the final minutes
before Episode IV.

If I were to nitpick, I'd actually be bothered by your first item and not bothered so much about the second.
The separation of inside and outside networks is actually something that is standard in certain industries (e. g. weapons manufacturers), where networks are separated by air gaps. Maybe it's a bit silly that the data receptacle is at the top of a roof,
but as far as incredible things go, the
necessity to manually select the “tapes” from the library would have irked me more.
I'm surprised, though, that this seemed to have dragged you out of the movie, though.
I really, really, really liked the first scene of the movie, it set the whole tone appropriately as did the depiction of war itself.

Watched it. Enjoyed it. A lot. All this talk about the tape storage systems taking them out of the film to say WTF?!, and no one has mentioned...
CGI Peter Cushing, it was very impressive, but still looked CGI and not real. Maybe that bit would have really worked if they kept him in the shadows, or as an over the shoulder/window reflections shot like his intro, or got Wayne Tarkin in again like RotS, or had less of him. Also, Leia...
Liked K2SO, that character could have been another Jar Jar, but they got him just about right.

Saw it last night, pretty happy overall with it, didn't pull any punches at the end.
The final scene with Vader was some grade-A prime cut nerd porn. He's been screaming to be brought back to his badass self ever since teenage annakin absolutely neutered his image. The sheer terror of being stuck in a cramped hallway with that beautiful jet black murder machine was a welcome change of pace for the series.
CGI Gran Moff Tarkin was pretty damn brilliant, they're getting reeeeaaaally close. CGI Leia wasn't as seamless, but screw it, the Vader hallway massacre moments before was still fresh in my mind so I wasn't bothered

Nice. Happy with that. Plen ty to chew on, great performances. Star destroyers ploughing into other star destroyers.
Ending was pretty cool. Glad they toughed it out to make the ending they did.
Looked like some of the star destroyer effects were practical too. I may be wrong but it sure looked liek it and better for it.

Just saw it.
I really liked how the constant presence of the Empire really makes the Rebellion feel like they're totally out classed. Ep IV is very run an gun the whole time and there isn't time to set that part of the mood.

just saw it too. I enjoyed the serious tone - it had an almost Guns of the Navarone feel to it.
CGI Peter Cushing was a little weird - the eyes were poorly done IMO. Too glassy and mirror like. And in one scene he jiggled oddly. Leia was better, but still something was off. Great job on everything else. I really enjoyed the adventure of getting the Death Star plans as a lead in to A New Hope, bookends nicely. Can't wait to get it on disk to watch these in sequence.

We're probably only ~10 years from crossing the uncanny valley. Just look how far CGI Tarkin has come from CGI Jeff Bridges in Tron 6 years ago.
As for the movie, I saw it three times - liked it waaay more than VII. Solid story, dark, and most importantly not a retread. Loved
the Vader scene at the end, although the first one was a bit cheesy (you know which part I'm referring too).

My wife and I saw Rogue One at an Alamo Drafthouse yesterday. It was amazing. My son summed it up nicely: "it's a World War II movie - like the ones made during the war." Yes, it really felt that way. I'm still processing how I feel about all of it, but it was really, really amazing.
CGI Tarkin was pretty good, and the voice used was too, but it felt a little "in-game cinematic" to me. CGI Leia didn't seem nearly as good, and I can't put my finger on exactly why...
The Alamo Drafthouses here in San Antonio, as well as Austin and Houston and elsewhere, held a "light saber" vigil for Carrie on the 28th. There were a LOT of people there.

I saw it just now. As usual I have stayed away from threads like this, but I went in with high hopes as many people have liked it, and...
Well, let's just say that is rare for me to agree with Cap'n Tightpants. This was dull, at least the central bit.
It is basically three heists - one to get to Forest Whitaker, one to go look at Mads Mikkelsen, and one to actually get the plans. The first one wasn't bad, exactly, but it was a bit disjointed. I don't really care about Jyn at that point, the other rebels are enigmas still and if that Saw guy is so bad that even the rebels disavow him, maybe they should show a bit of why? I liked the scenery, and it did move us forward to be told that the there is a flaw in the Death Star and where to find the details of it. It bothered me that Saw just gave up - they had already made it clear that he can't run, but here it sounded like he was just bored of being in the movie.
Then we go to look at Mads Mikkelsen, or Galen I guess. I say look at, because what is the plan here, really? You already know all you need to go find the plans, so why go to Rainy planet and accomplish nothing? If you wanted to save him, why now? Any point in the last 15 years would have been fine, any time in the future too - the Death Star is operational, he is irrelevant at this point. The subplot about Andor needing to kill Galen could have been cut - there wasn't space for it, and it fits poorly with a Rebel Alliance that has disavowed Saw. In fact, cut this entire section. Boring, pointless, and while I did stay awake, it was a close run thing. This is prequel-level bad.
So we cut to a debate around a conference table, after which Mon Mothma just gives up in the face of almost no opposition. Do they practice Libereum Veto, perhaps? But it is OK, because I can believe that the Rebels are inept and more importantly something has changed. This is where the movie starts to improve. Jyn has had a change of heart and is now all for the Rebellion, which bothered me a bit, but OK, I'm sure they cut something.
And now we have the assault on the Imperial archives, and this is where it gets good. By now I care about the protagonists, and this story mostly makes sense. The tape extraction doesn't, but I see you have been over that already. And then Chekov's Death Star is fired, which also makes no sense from a story perspective after the Empire has worked to hide the last time it was fired, but of course it had to happen, and the entire movie goes out in a blaze of glory.
So, yeah. Last act I liked, and I would have liked to see more of that, but it dragged insanely in the middle.

saw it this weekend. I enjoyed it for the most part. I tried to be spoiler free as possible, so I didn't know it dovetailed right into the beginning of ep4 like that.
Someone spoiled me that everyone died in the end and I didn't believe it. but yup! These are all new expendable characters, which was refreshing. Liked the blind guy. Also this movie seemed more diverse.
The bit with the radio tower also bugged me though, as it started to feel I was watching a lego star wars play through, where uploading the file was unnecessarily complex (why of course the controls for the antenna are wayyyy out on a catwalk! of course the controls for the comlink were some unmarked lever in the middle of the landing field!)
CGI Cushing was almost perfect, perhaps because he was in shadow. CGI Leia seemed a little too kawaii, her eyes were too big and sparkly. I would have been content with a handoff/voiceover and not showing her face.

I enjoyed it as much as TFA. It was fun. In particular I thought the retrieval of the plans was subtle genius; It made no ****ing sense it today's world, but in the world of the 70s it was probably apropos.
I thought ending with Leia was more stupid than I can handle. (Great CG in most cases though)

The beginning was a bit slow for me but it really took off in the last hour and it was a perfect segway into Episode 4! Now we know why Vader was so mad at them denying they were rebels because he SAW their ship detach from the destroyer.

I'm just going to have to drop this here:
I have seen - and even interacted with once - a real "data tape" storage system that worked JUST LIKE the system in the movie. Robot arm that circles a cylindrical tower full of actual data tapes.
Keep in mind these things: it was OFFLINE storage, it was supposed to be secure, and K-2SO had smashed the control systems for both the access doors and the storage tower. So Jyn climbing the tower was not JUST "gee whiz," it was actually the only way to get at the tape. And the iris door cycling open/closed was understandable in the context of "K-2SO borked all the control systems for the whole thing."
The discussions about how stupid it seems to have a secondary comm access point at the base of that big dish just points out how many folks in this thread AREN'T maintenance techs. It isn't even a stretch to think that an comm access there might be useful; it sure would be, from a maintenance perspective. "This darn thing isn't working from my cube half the base away...I wonder where the fault is?" See if it works along the chain from the user's cube to the antenna...which requires some sort of comm access (and a bunch of other diagnostic access as well) right there at the dish. Which is where you'd most likely put the actual transmitter anyway. Now having what looks like a speedboat's throttle as the "send" switch, that did take a little suspension of disbelief, but that was no big deal.
And however big that data file was, it looks like the Galactic Empire uses a 1988 version of AOL, judging from the upload speed...
Finally, shooting her way into the core with the data tape tower was more than a little reminiscent of Andromeda Strain...

So Jyn climbing the tower was not JUST "gee whiz," it was actually the only way to get at the tape. And the iris door cycling open/closed was understandable in the context of "K-2SO borked all the control systems for the whole thing."
IIRC It's a
StorageTek system or something close to that - back in the day this replaced many data op people who had the glorious job of manually loading tapes and later disks for large mainframes when needed. The one in the movie is hysterically large, the ones I remember were about 15 feet or so across and featured a central robot arm to load and remove media.

Well, I speak Japanese, so yes, but I guess I just wasn't aware that kawaii has made its way into the more mainstream US English vocabulary. You see, many of my friends also speak Japanese, and seasoning my sentences with a few Japanese words for good measure and to convey quite specific notions is normal to me. But us expats are hardly representative, so I wasn't aware how these words have spread.
If you don't my curiosity: where have you first heard it? In some kind of special forum (e. g. manga or anime forums)?
