okay...i have been following this for some time and am using Bell Sympatico HSE in Canada, and still have had no luck connecting....i run adsl-start, it connects fine, i do the "route add defalut yyy.yyy.yyy...." and that routes fine, go into my prefs, turn the no connection to manually, set my first set of numbers as my ip, set the host to "sympatico" (not quite sure what to put there) mask is set at 255.255.255.0 and the router address is set at my yyy.yyy.yyy...., apply the settings close the network prefs, launch ie and still no connection....I can ping something like others on this post were able to do, but still cannot connect with ie or omni web.....i know i'm close, and i know that you guys have been through this a million time by now....but what am i doing wrong...

thanks

I'm not really sure on this, but i think i can write a script to first install all the stuff in the correct directories, including the to be GUI.

And maybe i can write a startup script so you don't need to type those commands every time on boot.

Not now however, it's 2 in the morning here, and i'm busy with the Samba and Bash installers.

But i don't have adsl, so i will need someone to test the scripts for me, someone with good knowledge on the workings of PPPoE, volunteers please.

MrKaiC: Please take this into account with your GUI. It might just be there already is one running. I don't know if it is possible to test this, but if there is, test first please.
BTW: Do you think you could make GUI installers for my Samba and Bash work?
I have the commands all here. I just don't know how to build a java or cocoa app that excecutes them. Is there a way to excecute bin/sh scripts from those apps?
PPPoE goes first, but maybe you can give me some directions?

I think I have MrKaiC's app installed correctly, but when I run adsl-start it times out and doesn't connect. The lights on the DSL modem don't even blink, but I do have en0 entered in the setup.

I'm using SW Bell DSL. IP address, DNS servers, and PPPoE servers are all dynamic.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Just a word on the reseting the Network settings configuration. I first setup pppoe after using X for a week or so and having fooled around with the network settigns i had to follow the set the network settings to no connection, then to manual, then back to no connection on the next reboot.

Later I reinstalled os X from scratch after repartitioning my hard drive. This time around I set the network to 'no connection' from the start and didnt have to touch it again. Sooooo for anyone running this script after a clean install the network control panel thing shouldnt be necissary, but if youre modifying previous settings youll have to fiddle with it. At least that was my experience. Hope this helps.

just an update:

I Have been sucessfully using the Roaring Penguin port courtesy of Mr. KaiC. I have since discovered the process for getting online is much simpler than I originally thought, i.e.

Changing settings in the network control panel is not necessary. In fact the Network prefs do NOT need to be set to "No Connection". Mine are set to "Manually"

To get online via PPPoE I simply
1)Open Terminal. Change to SuperUser
2)type "usr/sbin/adsl-start
3)After "Connected!" prompt I type "usr/sbin/adsl-status"
4)My ISP (Mindspring) then provides the IP info. I type the SECOND IP address as part of this command:
route add default yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy

I'm now online. Note: This IP address never changes unless I mess with my settings in the Network Prefs.

Oh, yeah...

My Network Settings are connect "Manually"
My IP address is the SECOND number provided in the response to my "/usr/sbin/adsl-status " command--It never changes

Subnet Mask 255.255.255.1

Router (I dont have one--I don't know where this number came from--I did not enter it --It just appeared there)
169.254.205.182
Configure DNS manually
DNS numbers are provided by Mindspring
Hostname--localhost

ABOUT TIME

Finally got connected. wow os x has a lot of bugs, thank god this is beta and not final. Is there going to be a better version of this connection thing. This is why I stoped using linux, too much of a pain. Oh b.t.w. OmniWeb wont work, it just crashes. It's too late for me to care anymore. Thanx for your help everyone.

to pixel,

I'm with Sympatico HSE in Canada and i have no problem with my dsl connection. The DNS i use for Sympatico : 204.101.251.1 and 209.226.175.223 (and not 2.3.4.5 6.7.8.9 - Access Manager in Mac OS 9). Make sure you put "sympatico.ca" in the search domains, you need this in Mac OS X. Put "localhost" in Host (not sympatico).
That should work. Post here if you have anymore problem. This is a great forum to find solutions.

I have had no luck what so ever. What should you do if you have a dynamic IP and you connect through a hub to a modem? What is a netmask and what is a gateway, i have no idea and these are making me made in the way of configuring things

To Nebagakid:

I have the same set up as you do. I dont think you really need to know what thoes terms are to get on the internet in X.

make sure your network is set to no connection and the ppp thing is set to null modum.

Type adsl-setup... go through that your adapter is en0 not the normal eth0 it is in linux.
tyep adsl-start...
then adsl-status

it should print out 2 ip addresses use the second one it should end in .254

type roiute add default <that ip address>

then try to ping www.netscape.com
if you didnt get a reply then go to the network settings and go to manual type in the first ip address that the adsl-status printed out and put that in for your ip address. where it says router put in the second ip address. Where it says gateway mask put in 255.255.255.0 then enter in the DNS ip's and click aply. dont restart. try to ping www.netscape.com. and also try to ping one of thoes dns addresses. make sure when you shut down you change back to no connection. you shouldnt have to keep entering the manual information. i did it once then put it back to no connection and now i can connect.

hope this helps.

SETTING UP PPoE FOR BELL CANADA SYMPATICO:

pixel: Took me a while to figure this out but to get the Roaring Penguin to work on Bell's Sympatico HSE you need to remember the following:

- your login _includes_ @sympatico.ca or the connection will fail
- Once connection is up and running, set the DNS in your network control panel to 204.101.251.1 and 204.101.251.2 (others such as 209.266.175.223 will also work just as well)
- here's the kicker: unless you specify in adsl-setup that the server assigns the dns, you will only be able to ping the gateway and other modems sharing your gateway (xxx.xxx.xxx.1-256)

Took me a while to figure the last one out until I remembered talking to a friend who worked at Bell Nexxia about how the protocol works etc... Regardless of your settings Bell will assign your DNSes, but in the case of X I guess they just don't take.

Also, among other things he said that as long as you remain connected your IP will never change (despite the 24-hour rule in their literature) and that the 20MB limit on personal web traffic is neither monitored nor enforced unless you start serving ridiculous amounts of data (i.e. porn).

I had that same problem. Look at what the name of the file is and where it needs to be then copy it from the directory you un-tared the program. For some reason it forgot to copy it over.
if you still have problems e-mail me with the output. [email protected]

Found this,
[url=http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=8987]PortReflector[\url]
It lets Classic use the PPP connection of MacOS X. Maybe it will work with PPPoE ?
Maybe it can be edited to use PPPoE ?

I don't have PPPoE, but i've been following the thread and thought some people might like this.

Thanks for the pointer.

I gave it a quick try; it didn't work for me.
My experience was as soon as I removed my ISP's DNS from the TCP/IP pane (as per instructions) that PPPoE no longer worked. No surprise if you've been folowing this thread; but I'm an experimenter, and I had to try it. (The instructions specify that you must be using PPP Connect, which we aren't. I thought it might work because we _are_ using pppd.)

Maybe it can be edited to work.

I read that it maps the ports that classic uses as output to the ppp port or something like that. I would be very surprised if this person who build it would not be able to include an option to map it to PPPoE (or PPPd whatever i don't understand half people are saying here) and its ports (or something like that.

Someone got Port Reflector to work with the roaring penguin setup. Read about it here. He says he will post his setting in a follow up.

OK, I know there is a good reason no one is posting to this list, but I still freakin' cannot get OSXPB to ping anything once my Mindspring ADSL connection is active! When will the GUI show it's bitmapped face?

(the main reason I am posting is to keep this thread in the main page o' topics)

Question:
Yeah, for Mindspring users what do you put for your username and if you have a changing IP address with stable DNSs

Answer (from a Mindspring user)
username is your e-mail address (w/o @mindspring.com)

your IP address will not change after the initial setup

The first time you get a connection in terminal using adsl-start, then get your adsl-status. Mindspring's server sends you their IP address and yours. Yours is the second number. Enter that number in the Network Preferences Panel. Ignore the restart message.
Explorer should now work. YOU NEED ONLY DO THIS ONCE, after that your IP address stays the same unless you change it.

For more detailed instructions see my earlier posts. The Roaring Penguin PPoE port works beautifully with Mindspring ADSL, don't give up.

OK, here is my reply to all you lucky ADSL users that can connect. I have read through all the post and tried all the settings that everyone has described. No one seems to want to put down a definate listing of what they have what set to. I am on Mindspring and they were of no help at giving me the proper settings either. Here is a list of what I think I need along with comments.

In the PPP Connect app:
DNS Addresses (i put the two from my OS9 settings)
Local IP (mindspring told me to use 10.x.x.x)

In TCP/IP in Network Settings:
IP (i usualy came up with xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx from doing an ADSL-STATUS when i connect via terminal, using the second number)
Subnet Mask (mindspring says use 255.0.0.0, another said 255.255.255.0, and another said 255.255.255.1 which causes TCP/IP to bellyache if you try to apply)
Router (most confusing, mindspring said to use xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, another said xxx.something, and one said it just appeared. If i leave it blank, when i hit apply it will just adopt the IP setting from two fields above it)

In adsl-setup:
I am using my name without the @mindspring.com,
I have the ethernet set to en0,
I have DNS set to 'server', but have tried entering my Primary and Secondary,
timeout is set to 'no',
& my pass is correct.

In terminal, when I do the route delete default it gives me:
"route: writing to routing socket:No such process
delete net default: not in table"
Does this mean some kind of net services are not turned on in my system?
If I do route add default yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy, it seems OK

End result of all this, I can connect, sometimes with the assist of PPP Connect being open when I cli, but I cannot ping crap and Mail gives me "can't determine IP of host pop.mindspring.com".

If anyone knows what is up with the "No such process" I would be greatful. If a lot of you lucky DSLers would list what settings you use and where they go (instead of a vague 'IP is this', please specify like 'in the TCP/IP settings, for IP use'), maybe a pattern will become clear.

If anyone from Mindspring Tech Support is lurking, please drop the pppoe in the first place!

Hope this post wasn't to hard to bear. This forum has been great, but I would love to see it wrapped all neat and tidy with a grand solution

for nebagakid

for idle time enter "no"

for loki:

dont do a route delete just do this

route add default 199.174.41.1

(if this is the IP address in your network prefs and also the second IP address returned in the adsl-status--they must match or it won't work)

Hang in there, you're closer than you think.

REREAD the Roaring Penguin instructions carefully. This will work if you follow them exactly.

for loki:

when doing your adsl setup idle time should be "no" USE LOWER CASE
you only need to touch PPP connect once during the initial setup and the numbers you enter can (and should) be bogus, as per the Roaring Penguin instructions.

these are my network settings:

configure MANUALLY
hostname: localhost

IP address: the second IP number returned in adsl status--yours will be different

subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
router:169.245.205.182

configure dns: MANUALLY
207.69.188.186
207.69.188.187

Good luck

Posting this via OSX/IE 5/Mindspring

P.S. Be careful about postng all your IP data in an open forum. Some nimrod with nothing better to do could hack into your system

a heartfelt thanks to all (jpale, MrKaiC) as I am posting this on the OSX PB IE, which has blinked off within an hours use. I cannot get over that all I had to do was reset the default route to the newest IP. I pray that Mindspring/Earthlink goes DHCP soon. Off to build a firewall

This thread is excellent but after reading it I've been unable to get connected in OS X using my DSL modem. Here's what I've done and where the process hangs for me:

1. After uncompressing the PPPoE-OSX.tgz, ran adsl-setup

2. entered my username without any @provider.com suffix

3. ethernet set to en0 (that's a zero, right?)

4. I've tried all kinds of things for the DNS servers and I'm lost. Which values do I put here? One of the addresses below? Or "server"?

Here's the info from my OS 9 TCP/IP control panel:
ip- 192.0.0.1
subnet- 255.255.255.0
router-192.0.0.2
name server- 192.168.21.1
additional search domains- bellatlantic.net

I even took somebody's advice and entered the IP addresses shown in MacPoet's debug window. The only problem is that those seem to change every time I log in. Once they were:

ip-151.203.80.219
dns- 151.203.0.84

and now they seem to be:

ip- 151.203.81.9
dns- 151.203.0.84

Anyway, back to my adsl-setup, already in progress.

5. Timeout- no

6. Entered password correctly

7. I then choose to save the configuration and get the usual...

cp: /etc/resolv.conf-bak and /etc/resolv.conf are identical (not copied).
*** Error copying /etc/resolv.conf to /etc/resolv.conf-bak *** Quitting.

... which I read I should ignore. Okay, fine.

8. I then run /usr/sbin/adsl-start and get:

kmodload: unable to register module with kernal: (os/kern) invalid argument ......................

And lots of dots until it times out. I opened PPP-Connect for the hell of it and see it rapidly switching between "Authenticating" and "Connecting" and some other stuff... but nothing happens and I can't progress past this point.

Apologies for the long post. Any ideas? I'm stuck. Thanks in advance.

ip-151.203.80.219
dns- 151.203.0.84

and now they seem to be:

ip- 151.203.81.9
dns- 151.203.0.84

4. I've tried all kinds of things for the DNS servers and I'm lost. Which values do I put here? One of the addresses below? Or "server"?

Here's the info from my OS 9 TCP/IP control panel:
ip- 192.0.0.1
subnet- 255.255.255.0
router-192.0.0.2
name server- 192.168.21.1
additional search domains- bellatlantic.net

Have you tried it with "[email protected]" My setup actually required that, as did MacPoET. If not, run adsl-setup again (ignoring errors) and try exactly what was in MacPoET for your user name.

In the OS X Network TCP/IP pane use the DNS Addresses (name server address(es) you found in OS 9 TCP/IP. From your post it appears you have only one, 192.168.21.1

enter the additional search domains- bellatlantic.net

I think you can ignore the rest of the TCP/IP pane; you might want to remove the other stuff: the IP Address, the Netmask, and the router, but I don't think it matters.

The most important step that you haven't indicated as having done, is to change the TCP/IP pane pulldown to "No Connection." Lock it, and forget about it. Reboot. (This must be in the "No Connection" state after rebooting.)

You may need to review the instructions before you run adsl-start and adsl-status.
http://media.helioshealth.net:8080/

Here's a summary after you run adsl-start you run adsl-status

[localhost:/Users/davidaug/PPPoE] root# /usr/sbin/adsl-status adsl-status: Link is up and running on interface
ppp0 ppp0: flags=8051<UP,POINTOPOINT,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1492 inet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx --> yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy netmask
0xffffff00

Now, at the prompt, type the following:

[localhost:/Users/mrkai] root# route add default yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy

Replacing yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy with your provider's IP address, the number to the right of the "-->" in the status output.

This should work.

----------------------

You can log off and then back on again by

adsl-stop
route delete default yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy

adsl-start
route add default yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy

Hope this helps.

Cheers, David

mleroux01:

please retry with these settings:

in Terminal in adsl-setup:
for DNS numbers put "server" w/o quotes,
try with and without the @bellsouth in username,

in TCP/IP:
manual config,
get the IP from your PPPoE client on OS9 (you are required to use PPPoE, right?)
for subnet mask try both 255.0.0.0 & 255.255.255.0
the router will get filled in by itself,
ditto for dns,

launch PPP Connect and terminal after all that.
become superUser in Terminal and type adsl-start.
switch to PPP Connect and hit connect.
go back to terminal and when you get connected do adsl-status.
the last IP is what you need for *THIS* session.
then type "route add default yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy" with that IP
it should say that your gateway is set or something (I am in OS9 right now)

you can now surf and get mail and ping and everything.
I *HAVE* to redo that last part about setting up the default route everytime I have a new session.
Maybe there is another, better way, but for now I'll deal w/it.

Hope this helps

Good advice David and Loki, and I appreciate it. But I followed both of your suggestions and I still can't get past the connecting phase of adsl-start.

David, to answer your questions:
- yes, I had set the TCP/IP setting to "No Connection"
- my MacPoET username does not have an "@provider.com" suffix. However, I've tried both in adsl-setup without success.

Loki:
- yes, I was using PPPoE in OS 9

I even went back to my original settings but didn't have any luck.

Thanks again for your help. I'll keep working on it.

My ISP is switching to PPPoE only now. So soon I'll be left without ADSL in X. Any progress on the client yet?

This forum has really helped me out. I am with Mindspring, and now online with my DSL!

I found that I did need to have the "@mindspring.com" after my user name.

I also found out that I could either enter the DNS server addresses from my Mac OS 9 Enternet (TCP/IP) setup, or simply enter "server" during the adsl setup process. It all works, and I am very happy!

One question though...I remember reading somewhere about how to setup a firewall in OS X, but for the life of me, I can't find it. Could someone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks to all involved in this, it warms my heart to see all this online teamwork!

I too need some helpful soul to post a definitive step-by-step list of what to do to use DSL with OS X. I've been trying for three weeks using all of the suggestions here and I'm out of ideas.

Somebody please just do a dump of their Network control panel and exact arguments typed into adsl-setup and post them here. Thanks.

Thought I better add a few more details...

First of all, from what I can tell, PPP Connect doesn't enter into it. Although I do have my dailup account information entered here which I was using before I could get my DSL working.

Initially in the TCP/IP area (under System Preferences-Network) I was trying to connect with it set to manual. I had only entered the DSN addresses that were in my TCP/IP settings in OS 9. But following the directions in this forum, I now have it set to "No Connection"

Now, as far as the "adsl-setup" is concerned, as I said before I have entered my user [email protected] (didn't work without the "@mindspring.com"

I have activate on demand set to "no"

And I have the two DNS addresses from my OS 9 setup entered (although setting it to "server" also seemed to work).

Then, when prompted, I entered my Mindspring password.

From there it all works as described in the great intructions from http://media.helioshealth.net:8080/ (thanks again MrKaiC!). Having to connect and disconnect in the terminal is a pain, but hey it works!

I hope this helps some other Mindspring members, everything else you need to know should be here in this forum.

Once again, can someone help me with a firewall?

Thanks
