I have noticed that after I upgraded Leopard on my iMac (C2D, 2.16 GHz, 64-bit , last of the white iMacs) the fans almost never spin up. Even when encoding video (ranges from 50-90% CPU) the fans barely spin up at all. The only thing I can think of is that a) Its optimizations in Leopard, b) the 64-bit OS, and c) its a major bug that puts me at risk of a CPU over heat. I have tested video encoding on my MacBook (1st gen Core Duo, 2.0 GHz) and the fans go full blast when encoding (at it takes a long time).

Question: if I'm not mistaken, was Tiger a 32-bit only OS?

Can anyone with a Core Duo running Leopard test this to see if your fans go full blast? And can other C2D iMac owners test this to see if the fans spin up?

Thanks

It's has nothing to do with 32 versus 64-bit, for one. I don't think it's anything to worry about, for two. YMMV.

50%-90% really isn't that much, even over a prolonged period of time.

Remember, the dual-processor machines go to 200%.

Bingo. 130F is very moderate. There's no need for extra fan noise if your iMac's CPU is at 130F. Get it up to 150F and you'll hear something.
