After looking at the gizmodo contest and then the digg comments I got to thinking why Apple should put their time into designing a Mac tablet. My idea is the Mac tablet would be a nice small desktop too (if going by the gizmodo contest winner's idea). Go to school or work with your Mac tablet, come home and stick it on its stand and use Apples BT KB and mouse (or whatever KB/M that you prefer).

Mac tablet specs (ones that I want):
3 USB, 1 FW 400
Wireless N/BT
512 MB or 1 GB of RAM
100 GB HD or 32/64 GB SSD
Multi-touch
iSight and IR
Leopard

What do you guys think?

I use a Mac at work, with a graphics tablet, and have a Tablet PC at home (I'm a graphic designer). I prob would have considered a Mac tablet had one been available, however having tried Ink in OS X with my graphics tablet, I'd have to say that it's just not good enough at recognising handwriting at the moment. There is a custom made Mac tablet which you can buy though.

I still don't see the appeal of one if it can't fit in my pocket I might as well carry a laptop.

They're handy if you're a designer or Illustrator because (obviously) you can just draw straight onto the screen. It's more like a laptop than a pocket gadget.

Yippie, stylus' and portables are fun. I love drawing straight lines when standing.

So, basically you want a Wacom pen tablet-like device then.

That's certainly not something that most people are really interested in. Sure, it suits a niche market very well, but... it's niche.

I view tablets kinda like voice control. It's cool in theory but those who actually find them MORE useful and/or efficient are in the minority.

This is exactly the perfect product for Apple to reinvent. Just photocopying an iPhone on a zoom setting isn't enough. They need to make multi-touch work in a way that makes you think; "how the hell did we get along with the way we did things before?".
Being in debt and celebrating a lower deficit is like being on a diet and celebrating the fact you gained two pounds this week instead of five.

Seriously I think the iPhone is the perfect tablet. I don't want to draw or handwrite on a portable. It was done in the 90's and it didn't work, just look at the Newton (iPhone 1.0) and PDAs (cellphones 1.0)

For business people on the go. Not for artists.

Actually the Newton for it's time had a neat drawing program deal. But that was over a decade ago SWF. Technology has changed for the better.

For example, drawing tablets in the 90s suck compared to the ones made today as far as precision goes. The mouse/keyboard combo is just cumbersome to true designers, and has needed a different direction for decades now. The drawing tablet was a plus.. but it needs to go further. And it will.

Apple doesn't reinvent. They take existing ideas and make them better. The tablet idea is so bad that making it better will still only be mediocre.

I think you need more RAM in the default configuration.

iSight in a tablet is pretty useless.

You add up all that and all you have is an Apple branded polished turd.

What IS so great about a tablet? That you can still use it with one hand while standing? You have to sacrifice a lot of usability to gain that advantage.

I do think that multi-touch could be useful in a PC, just not in a tablet configuration.

I think they would ship it with Jaguar On the serious side, it would have to be a bit better than that. I think 2 Gb of RAM standard and 120 Gb HD standard. On a tablet you have to be able to have multiple apps open at the same time and they have to be able to open very quickly. Leopard and 512 Mb of RAM don't let that happen. What would IR be for except the Apple Remote?

BTW, if Apple made a MacBook touch that looked like that I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Assuming my heart is still beating when Apple finally comes out with a tablet.

True. I don't, however, see Apple developing for such specialized usage.

I would agree with that. Apple has given up small markets after the likes of the Newton and original Apple TV (err, Mac TV).
