Anyone want an invite?

Boxee is a free and open source cross-platform media center and entertainment hub with social networking features that is a fork of XBMC media center software[1][2][3]. As a a "'Social Media Center", Boxee enables its users to view, rate and recommend content to their friends through many social networking features. Boxee is still under development and is currently only available as Alpha releases for Mac OS X[4] and Ubuntu Linux[5]

I think this is what we're all going for. They recently released a version for the ATV. Wired wrote about it a few days ago.

It is great on the ATV, love it! Patchstick and install was easier than I thought, gives you SSH access, XBMC (if you want it) and Boxee in about a 2 minute install :-)

Shared my iMac via SMB and Boxee sees everything I want to share...

Now if it would only handle 720p mvk files :-\

Thanks for the invite Peter. I'm traveling at the moment but will get this loaded on Monday on my ATV.

Any troubles making your USB stick bootable?

I have a Mac Mini hooked upto my TV so was a snap for me. I've heard its fairly easy for Apple TV though.

I really love Boxee, I'm really impressed.
Its very stable, nice UI and I really love seeing what my friends are watching/listening to. The lovely "web2.0" Last.FM integration and stuff is cool too

Thanks for the invite!

I've had it installed on my aTV since Wednesday and have been itching to get logged in. The aTV install was dead simple, though a little stressful.

I'm more interested in being able to play more video formats. The current patchstick stuff is hard to find and sketchy.

XBMC didn't seem to have the codecs for other video formats pre-installed. Boxee, on the other hand, had not troubles at all. Also interesting for me is being able to play Hulu through XBMC/PlayOn! (http://xbmc.org/wiki/index.php?title...Shares_in_XBMC)

I think this is just bad phrasing,

Put in a USB stick on your computer, run the atvusb software and let it create the drive, it should rename it PATCHSTICK put the sitck into your ATV while its turned off and turn it on, if it boots to a Linux icon it worked so follow the directions, if not the stick will not work, find another one (I got best results with one around 1 or 2GB)

Some sticks will bot work, but you don't need to do anything to make it bootable

I had no problem playing AVI or mkv on XBMC or Boxee, I think I may like XBMC better (once I got it setup and skinned how I like)

Between Boxee, the iPhone and fring I have now reached tech nirvana. I forgive freetards for everything. Even in alpha this takes Front Row out back and surprise sexes it.

Does boxee install the additional codecs just for use within the boxee interface or are they available to the ATV itself? I'd like to use ATV's interface to play some .avi files and will use ssh to move them over if that's the case.

For now, Boxee is in my trash.
If Boxee isn't in the trash, boxeeservice runs which kills the Apple Remote & Front Row.

It's a good app, I'm going to put it onto a Linux box and wait for the next version before I put it back on this MacBook.

In the trash for me as well. It just doesn't work for me right now. On the other hand, it will be very nice for my media center Mac Mini especially if they get Hulu, etc. working.

just disable the Boxee remote launcher in the Boxee preferences, that way Boxee still works but when you use remote outside Boxee it uses FrontRow

Works great for me on my Mac Mini - even plays 1080p rips, which isn't something VLC does with much success.

Can invite people too if you want access.

They have also committed to having another build out by the 20th so should hopefully see some of the glitches fixed.

I've got mine indexing 1.5TB of content on a NAS, and it works like a charm.

Boxee is effing amazing on the Apple TV. Highly recommended.
I just recently bought another ATV to try take 2 (old one is running as a leopard fileserver) and did the whole patchstick thing on it. Of course I also installed Boxee and now I’m blown away by it. It seemed rather useless on my MBP (i also never use frontrow, ever) but it really shines on the ATV.

Plus it’s an early alpha with a solid python plugin framework — it is bound to get better and better.
