FTP to AppleTV

I found this article on how to enable the built-in FTP server on an AppleTV. This may sound like a stupid question, but I assume (and the article doesn't mention) that I have to first connect to the ATV via SSH so I can issue these commands to it, right?

Maybe I'm missing something here, but if you have ssh enabled, why not use an ftp client that supports sftp (uses the same port as ssh)?

If ssh is already enabled, just use something like Cyberduck and connect to it that way using SFTP. I did this the other day and it worked fine.

The only reason to use FTP over SFTP is if you need faster data transfers. If this were sensitive data, I'd also add that you ought to be behind a firewall and in a private network/VLAN, but obviously this doesn't apply to uploading/downloading movies to your ATV.

I'm pretty comfortable with my security setup, so to me FTP makes more sense because of the speed advantage. Unfortunately, I don't have a Tiger install handy (I'm using Leopard), so that final step for Take Two is out of reach at the moment.

Since I had to get some stuff working with ATV 3 last night, I decided to revisit FTP. The site you mention has been updated with a tip to get ftpd from the 10.4.11 (Intel) combo updater. Using Pacifist I found it in the package and copied it to my ATV. From there I followed the instructions from the site. This worked just fine on ATV 3.
I don't notice much of a speed difference between scp from Terminal (1.5 MB/s), ftp put from Terminal (2 MB), or an ftp transfer from Cyberduck and FileZilla (2 MB). This is likely a limitation of my own network: both source and destination (ATV) are on the same wifi (802.11n) network.
I moved the ATV to 802.11g and managed to get 3 MB/s. (So the source gets n in the 5 GHz band and the ATV gets g in the 2.4 band.) This contrasts with my previous setup where I could scp from source over n to ATV over ethernet and get 4 MB/s.
Those of you on a wired setup or wifi n --> wired should get better speeds with FTP.
