I have heard conflicting information about the compatibility of the current iPod wired remote control with ear phones with older iPod models. Please could some one confirm if tthe wired remote ear phones only work with the newer iPODs?

Indeed, if it is the case(that the current wired remote does not work with the 1st generation iPod), then where can I get the iPod wired remote control with ear phones for my first generation iPod here in the United Kingdom?

The remote currently on Apple's site will not work with earlier iPods. The remote connector has changed. I am not sure where you can buy the older one. Good luck.

You should be able to find some of the older remotes on eBay.
