10p - Wake up. I’m in debt to that goddamn raccoon tanuki up to my eyeballs, which means time to grind for clams and fish. I could catch bugs, but at night, in April, moths are all this place has going. If I’ve got the exchange rate right, common moths sell here for 93¢ a head.

Store is closed until 8a, so I need to put everything I catch in storage. Storage got filled up last night, and I needed to start putting fish tanks in my house. It got a little out of control.

Spent a couple hours yesterday clearing stuff out of storage and dragging it to the store, so hopefully I have room for tonight’s haul.

1a - I’m doing most of my fishing in the ocean instead of rivers or ponds. Lots of high-value stuff right now, like seahorses, clownfish, and Ellen DeGeneres fish. The beach is also where the clams are, which can get cut into bait, so it’s a good deal all around. It’s also the easiest place to bait fish.

The east side of the island has a good two to three times the clam density of the west side for whatever reason. North side is too annoying to get to. South side is filled up with coconut trees I “liberated” from other islands, and they get in the way of clam hunting.

1:34a - Ran into Hazel the chipmunk, who’s up late. She seems a bit touchy, so I’ve been keeping my distance. She got really cranky yesterday.

I accidentally gave her a butterfly earlier today, which may have calmed her down, but I’m not taking any chances.

1:52a - Talked to Hazel anyways. She either approved of me wearing the same outfit, or was making fun of me. It was ambiguous.

This is what I currently have in the closet...

If I was going to change, what should I wear? The kimono and rumba costume are out. I’m saving those for special occasions.

3:40a - Nope. Storage is full. I didn’t even think I was trying hard to fill it up with critters.

4:30a - Sort of a weird time. 5a is the “official” start of the day on the island, so I kinda feel like I’m in a bit of a holding pattern until the “real” day begins..

Also, last chance to buy stuff online before the selection changes. I ordered a telescope, a pair of water shoes, two t-shirts, and a mariachi record... poster... MP3... thing. I can hang it on the wall, or play it on a turntable, stereo, boom box, or whatever.

5a! - Time for chores!

Gather fruit.
Chop wood.
Water the plants.

I wrote about liberating trees from other islands. I’ve got lots of wood to chop if I want to get it all before tomorrow, and I’ll have to craft 6 or 7 axes along the way.

Luckily, the other two are much less onerous.

Ok, so I haven't played Animal Crossing. I'm always late to these things.
A few weeks ago, I started playing (binge playing) Stardew Valley.
From the look, Animal Crossing seems to be similar.

Is there any need for me to jump into another, but similar game ?

Probably not.

The thing is, while AC can be binged, it’s not really meant to be. By deciding to binge, I’ve subjected myself to a lot of dull, repetitive behavior over the last few days.

Early on, I tried to switch to SV, but I choked on the graphics and UI. From what little I played, SV looks to have a lot more depth to it.

The fundamental difference is the pacing. AC is in real time. You’re supposed to be playing it for a bit each day.

Edit: the second biggest difference is the whimsy quotient. AC is a silly cartoon. SV seems kinda dark, and there are some damaged people who live there. I also got some not particularly veiled politics from it, whereas the AC developers play their politics a little closer to the vest.

3:40p - Took a nap instead of doing chores. Worst case scenario for bailing is I lose the wood/fruit for today only. I have until 5a to get it in gear if I want.

It’s apparently Nature Day, and Leif the Sloth is selling rare plants. Just bought a ton with money that was supposed to go to the tanuki. He’s also selling azaleas. No Iggy or Banks.

Dumping stuff at the store. Not much interesting for sale today. Got a paper lantern.

You are ... almost making this sound fun.

The irony of games like AC etc gamifying normal daily chores, while they take us away from our IRL daily chores... excuse me I have to go cook some energizing fruit and mushrooms.

Why don't chores IRL give you that dopamine satisfaction? sigh.

It actually is.

These developers totally understand all the abusive psychology which goes into something like FarmVille, and turns it to the forces of good.

So far, it’s a much more satisfying crafting experience than Zelda. Few ingredients, tons of different outcomes. Zelda has that flipped. Well... the multitude of ingredients in Zelda are a bit of a sham. They’re all reskins.

Also... AC has recipes.

5a! - New day!

Put off everything yesterday. Was very sleepy. In hindsight, I needed coffee.

In other words, I put off my chores and didn’t finish until an hour ago.

New day means I get to do them again, right now.

Or not... I’ll probably half-ass it a bit.

It did occur to me the later I water the plants, the more chance I’ve given some rain a chance to do it for me. It’s still April weather, and there’s been more days of rain than not. I have no idea what watering the plants does. They don’t need it, but the tanuki promised something interesting would happen.

Also, bought fine art from a fox yesterday. The tanuki said he pushes forgeries, but I bought one anyways, just to see what would happen. Owl says it’s legit.

5a! - New day!

Bunch of places were closed yesterday for various reasons, so kind of uneventful. Clams went nuts about an hour ago. I’ll have to see if that’s random, or it’s their schedule.

New day!

The tanuki hired a shih tzu, and she’s the greatest.

Clams seemed normal at 4a, but I didn’t linger. Needed to finish chores before the new day.

4:40a - Almost new day!

Looks like there is a nightly clam explosion, but it’s closer to 3a. Pockets kept overflowing with clams. Luckily, I have a little bait cutting table near where they hang out.

I did not, but they were selling it alongside “bonjour” and “ciao” shirts, so I figured it was the equivalent.

Quick Google confirms.

“Privet” is the Latin alphabet.

My island has been rated by its residents.

It’s “too rural” with “too many trees”.

They’re not wrong, but I can’t make the island better without cash money, and trees are cash money.

Went on the vacation.

They took all my possessions at the beginning, so that fits the theme. Gave them back at the end though.

I was hoping I’d get to buy a Che Guevara t-shirt, but instead I had to find my way out of a maze for cash.

It’s snot (heh) the hoax virus, but starting today, at least two of the population have shown signs of body vermin.

Hamster cage was also on sale today at the general store.

Fruit is peaches. Lots of butterflies, very few fish or clams... It's frustrating not having tools to build bridges. Our corner of the island with two people and two NPC is a tad crowded.

Hooray!!! Definitely save your peaches if you can and sell them on my island (or some other non-peaches island). You’ll get 5 times the price.

Do you have any bridges yet?

Edit: what did you think of the beginning? I honestly thought it was awful. I love me some in medias res, but I feel the game needed to start with an exciting warmup, not an interrogation at customs.

Edit2: assuming yours plays the same music, I feel like the developer told the songwriters “I want a generic theme from an late 80s TV show... maybe about doctors or lawyers or something”.

And they friggin nailed it.

Ooooh... if you don’t already know this, mash on the A button to speed up the crafting animation.

Not as good as a skip, but much better than sitting through the whole thing at 1X speed.

I have upgraded my tent to a house, for an outrageous sum. Can I move it later? Say, once we develop bridges over here?! Fir trees are growing slowly.

The airport is open so we can have guests.

I was straightup bored, with no tools to do anything but fish or bugcatch. The recipes I bought were either too useless or too advanced. Discovered that since the kid started the island, only she could initiate the storyline that lets us have axes. I could talk to Tom all day and he only wanted to discuss my mortgage, not fascinating wildlife.

So now we have axes. And the museum is on its way.

Progress!

I had an auspicious visitor to the island.

She had a chance to talk to Derwin the duck, and noted rock star K.K. Slider the dog, who’s also visiting.

I’m sure she noticed I have too many trees and flowers, and don’t quite know what to do with them.

I’m also sure she noticed my house is very, very empty.

I closed my airport to check something, and then got a server error trying to reopen. I’ll try again in a bit.

In general, I’ll try and keep it open if I’m playing. Stop by every day and check out the new offerings at the stores and sell some peaches.

As I mentioned, I often leave it on and go do other things, so if you visit and I just stand there I’m AFK.

Very damp yesterday.

As an aside, I’m taking photos of my TV because the only way I've found to get screenies off the Switch is to post them to Facebook or Twitter.
