SMART Utility says my two relatively new 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda drives are failing. SMARTReporter says they are okay. Not sure what to think.

Here's what SMART Utility has to say:

Can anyone offer up some advice?

Smart Reporter and Disk Utility both trust the manufacturer thresholds for when to sound the alarm. I think those thresholds are too high, preventing early warnings. Smart Utility goes the other way in my opinion, sounding the FAILING alarm too soon. A healthy disk usually has no reallocated sectors in my experience, but a few are not unreasonable on a 1.5 TB drive with 3 billion blocks.

The first drive is tripping on 1 reallocated sector. I don't like the background errors elsewhere in the readout, but this is a Seagate after all. Not enough to sweat about.

The second drive is tripping on 5 reallocated sectors, and for the drive exceeding 40 C at some point. Google's drive tests showed no significant correlation between drive temperature and failures up to 40C, and neither drive has any pending sector reallocations (#197) so I still wouldn't sound the alarm.

My advice is to check the values periodically to see if they get worse. Assuming you have a TM backup of course. But you should have backups anyway.

Why not install smartmontools and get a third opinion? One of them may already be using smartmontools, but if it were me I'd go by what this says, this tool is included with RedHat and other Linuxes, it's been around the block.

So a couple of bad sectors is enough for SMART Utility to sound the alarm? That seems a little much. I'm not going to be in the States again until December, I'll probably pick up a couple of new drives then. These aren't even a year old but I hate to take a chance. My home office is usually around 30℃ which explains why the hard drives are getting a little hot. I've taken the sides off my computer and have a box fan blowing directly into the case which has brought the temp down on the drives by about 10℃. I'm sure the humidity here isn't helping either.

And yes I've got everything backed up on external USB drives. I'm obsessive about backups.

Treat this as a warning that you should keep an eye on the drives, it could be a start of things to come.

When my 500GB Western Digital drive had 1 pending sector, it was enough to cause the entire OS to hang for 10 minutes at a time as it tried to access some piece of data in that location. I replaced the drive under warranty with an advance RMA. I know a healthy drive will have no re-allocated, pending or offline uncorrectable sectors and in my opinion, there is no reason to tolerate it if the drive is under warranty.

In the past, I am not aware of Seagate offering this service to when I was RMAing drives on behalf of a company, but it's possible they will to home users, or have started.

Basically my theory is that as soon as drives start getting Pending Sectors or Reallocated Sectors you shouldn't trust it for any critical work. Pending Sectors means that there's a block that cannot be read effectively, and depending on where it is you can experience unusual errors or data corruption as seanc mentions. Reallocated Sectors means that a subsequent write forced the block to be reallocated to a new (unused one).

The Google study pretty much claimed that as soon as errors occurred there was a much higher chance of disk failures occurring, so it's best to relegate that drive to something non-critical or keep it safely backed up. My experience with SMART output from Disk Utility/manufacturer details is that it's close to useless - it only warns you when the drive is literally failing completely and sometimes that can be too late to save much data.

I've seen drives with over hundreds of reallocated blocks or pending ones yet they don't flag in Disk Utility so I have to agree with reader50 that the thresholds are too high usually. It's better you make your own judgement as soon as you're aware it's starting to obtain bad blocks and decide for yourself when to handle it.

Personally given the low cost of drives these days I don't think it's worth saving money by keeping potentially failing hardware in service for serious work, but each to their own I guess...

I've got some bad HD karma. Now my new WD drive is apparently going bad (according to SMART Utility):

I'm not going to be back in the States until the end of January. You think I'll be okay until then? I don't want to have to deal with trying to get a replacement drive down here.

And as before, SMARTReporter is not showing any warnings. I just happened to be looking in the Console and noticed this:

12/27/10 10:02:45 AM kernel disk0s2: I/O error.

It'll be fine for a while, maybe a good few years, especially since it has moved that data onto another sector and marked that one as bad. Very unlikely that SMART reporter will show anything, the trigger point is probably so high.

So I shouldn't worry too much about all these I/O errors?

Ah there's still one pending, missed that. Once that is fixed, it should be OK.

If I'm correctly translating 'Hac Sno' to mean Hackintosh, the bootable MHDD disk should fix it right up.
Take backups first!!

Seeing repeated I/O errors in the console like that makes me go

I'd replace the drive.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

The I/O errors have gone away. I'm presuming a write was attempted on the sector in question and it was successfully remapped. I'm still going to replace the drive next month.
