Macromedia Flash Player 7 is now out. MUCH faster than version 6.

Benchmark:
Version 6 - 69 fps
Version 7 - 101 fps

The few flash sites I've tried are quite smooth. (TiBook 1 GHz Radeon 9000.)

It seems that this update is the real deal.

And don't forget to download the stand alone player....I save flash games to my HD and the speed improvement is remarkable.

iBook 600mhz Panther 7b49
version 6 59
version 7 61

significant improvement...

Are you sure didn't install the 7 beta last month? 60 fps is already pretty good for an iBook 600. I was only getting 69 with Version 6 with my GHz TiBook. I think I had it plugged in then so it should have been at max performance. I'm running X.2.6 Jag. BTW, I ran it again and this time only got 92, but that's still better than the 69 before.

Here is the Roxio Toast Flash demo which is supposed to be quite slow on some systems.

I wasn't trying to be sarcastic, it just came out that way . Flash playback on this iBook is much improved over the last non beta version; I had forgotten that I did install the pervious beta so there wasn't much of a difference this time round. The roxio demo was smooth and quick, not choppy at all.

I didn't do this benchmark with version 6 because I didn't know it existed. I did a benchmark with my 800Mhz iBook and on my PC with a AMD Athlon XP 2400+ to compare.

iBook 800 - 77fps
Athlon XP 2400+ - 225fps

What vid card with the Athlon? Anyways, I'm guessing something like 77 fps would be good enough for current Flash stuff, but 30 on this test would not.

Update and try it again with version 7. Check that Roxio demo first though. What vid card?

I just noticed something (not sure if it is new to version 7) - you can tab between UI elements in flash movies - see here:

While not seeing 'dramatic' differences or speed increases...I can't complain about the upgrade.

That's pretty impressive.

Resummarized with new info:

Benchmark.

Pismo G3 400 MHz, 8 MB Rage Mobility 128
Version 6 - 16 fps
Version 7 - 36 fps (46 with other apps closed)

TiBook G4 1 GHz, 64 MB Radeon 9000
Version 6 - 69 fps
Version 7 - 101 fps

Pentium 4 1.6 GHz, 16 MB Rage 128 Pro (Win NT4)
Version 6 - 104 fps (I think it was version 6, but I'm not 100% sure.)
Version 7 - 147 fps

(Ratm's numbers don't count because he was comparing against Flash Player 7 beta.)

For real-life usage both the TiBook and the Pentium 4 both seem quite adequate now. This was not always the case with the TiBook previously though.

Well, you might not believe this, but I decided to run the benchmark again, but this time I closed all my open applications so that only Safari was running, and I got a score of 46.

This is quite nice. The GFX card in the pismo is the ati rage mobile, i think.

Cheers Eug for the summary.

The installer should put it in /Library/Internet Plugins, which installs it for all browsers.

Hmmm.. In X.2 it varied between about 90 and 100.

I consistently get 89-91 in X.3.

On a 1 Ghz Tibook running Panther I get 85-88 FPS. Are you running Jaguar or panther?

On a 1.6 G5 running panther I get 74 FPS with flash 6 and 87 with flash 7. I must say, most things I have done just confirm my 1Gz tibook being faster than my G5. I would never have imagined how much of a dog the 1.6 Ghz G5 really is.

Is there something wrong with my setup? I wouldn't have expected the dual 867 to be only 5 fps faster. I performed both tests in safari with all other apps closed.

My tests using Flash 7

MDD 867, 2gb Ram, Radeon 9000 64mb, 10.2.8
58 fps

600mhz ibook, 640mb Ram, ATI Rage 8mb, 10.3
53 fps

To be fair, the ibook was just freshly loaded with 10.3 but still I would have expected my MDD to pound my ibook, the difference in video memory alone would make me figure to at least get 70 fps on the MDD. Any idea what is causing this or is my MDD really this slow when it comes to flash?

I just tried it again and I now get 122 FPS with flash 7. I have found a fix for those slow G5 machines!
