Even though this is about the iPhone, it's really nothing technical so I figured it would be more appropriate to post in the lounge...
My sister lost her iPhone in the snow (in Illinois) on December 3rd. She and about 10 of her friends looked for hours to no avail. They even used a metal detector.
Fast forward to Dec 30. Some of the snow had melted and low and behold, there sits an iPhone 4 where she claims she looked a thousand times. She instantly calls me and asks what to do so I told her to take out the sim card and put in rice for a week. I figured there was no way in hell it would work after being buried in the snow for a month.
She turned it on 2 days ago and it works perfectly. If anyone was wondering, she had it in one of these cases.

I was fully expecting an apparition of Steve Jobs to pop up somewhere in the story, but the phone working is good too.

You should get in touch with Apple about this. They might make it worth your while.
$10 iTunes voucher for example.

But would I just call customer service and say "You won't believe this..."

My original iPhone went thru the washer - twice.
The last time I didn't even open it, just put it on the floor in front of the fridge.
After a day of drying out it worked fine, nothing wrong.
I got a new iPhone4 shortly after, the old one lives in the garage on AirPort.

They really might insist on some pix (at the very least). They really want people to game them by hoaxing such stories - or the negative publicity it could bring.

Is there any precedent for Apple caring about stories like this?

A little late for that. Just a long email chain from my sister and proof from her friends... no pics.

Why didn't they call her iPhone? They could follow the sound of the ring.

Tried. She had it on silent (not even vibrate).

Don't you guys have that service that even if your phone is on silent, if you use your computer to contact the phone, then it does actually ring? Or is it just for one particular phone manufacturer? Can't remember.

The funny thing is, she lost her phone in the snow earlier that same day so I told her to download "Locate My iPhone" app and she brushed me off.

Miracle stories, small or large. always puts a smile on people's faces! Apple should keep a record of possible product miracle and share it. Could be a good PR move, but then again they have enough PR.

Find my iPhone does this. You can override the vibrate or silent setting.
