That's the heart of my problem. Since when the adding the letters 'ar' to the beginning of a word change an 'as' sound to an 'aw' sound?
I'd settle for some type of cage match between Arkansas and Kansas for pronunciation rights.

1 corn farmer takes on 2 Arkansas welfare recipients...
LOSER SHAVES HIS HEAD!!!
(I think this is how to promote a wrestling match)

The best part is there's an Arkansas River. But it's pronounced AR-KAN-SAS.

The whole thing comes from the French explorers who wrote out the local Indian tribe names as if they were French words. Once the names were established (in French) people started pronouncing them the way they heard them, so the "ah" sound eventually morphed into an "aw" sound.
What is the deal with all this "that state's name is stupid" stuff? And what does it have to do with great looking ladies at clubs? More club pictures of great looking ladies!

Here's comes 'glenn' with his 'facts.'
But honestly, it just really irks me. I put up with enough incongruities in the english language.

Actually, I'm not.
I just looked it up and it appears the pronunciation varies by state. In Kansas (where I have friends who first told me of this live) they tend to pronounce it AR-KAN-SAS. In Arkansas (from where I know no one) they tend to pronounce it AR-KAN-SAW.

I tend to think that the oversized portion of the text might have something to do with that. I've never heard it called the AR-KAN-SAS River. Not even in Westerns (and because it's in the movies, it MUST be right )
