Since I fit into the "under 30 and still looks like he may be a teenager" category I get completely snubbed by the greeters. Which is fine by me, I'd rather get greeted by a Bigmouth Billy Bass.

This is on my mind because last night I stopped on the spur of a moment to pick a few bins to pack stuff in, and regretted the decision immediately. Never go to a Wal•Mart while there's daylight.

Edit: While I was in line I was coming up with slogans like, "If Sam Adams is always a good decision Wal•MArt is the definitive opposite" and "Wal•Mart; You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy."

In fact I usually exit and enter again a few times. And I make sure I get the same greeter, but I pretend it's the first time we've met.

The greeters at my nearest WalMart are horribly mean, especially this really old man that looks just like my own grandpa and thinks everyone is stealing.

I always say hi regardless (even to the sneering, racist lady), but they're generally not as friendly as old Sam Walton would've been.

That's reminds me, I remember when Wal•Mart first opened in my town. The hallmarks of Wal•Mart back then was it was such a consumer friendly experience. Nowadays it's no different than K•Mart with the exception of the greeter, who is as sincere as Hillary Clinton without any of the acting ability.

Yes, because creates a situation where I can return the greeting (equally insincerely or awkwardly) or ignore them, making me look like some sort of asshole for wanting to pick up my porno magazines, large box of condoms, bottle of Old Harper, a couple panty shields, some illegal fireworks, and one disposable enema (maybe two) without having to engage in a fake, superficial social interaction.

Not to mention nowadays they come off as thinly veiled security guards, rather than the ambassadors of consumerism they're supposed to embody.

I find IKEAs easy to navigate. I guess anything I've ever bought there has either required a cart of been easy to carry, because I didn't even know they charge for bags. Anyway, I take the experience IKEA 10/10 times. God knows the cashiers aren't any slower.

A Costco cashier rings up 3 times as many items per hour as a WalMart cashier. Of course, they get paid a lot more money.

Since moving, I find myself using walmart occasionally - generally, I'm annoyed enough when I walk in that the greeters know enough not to bother.

Hell, I'll take Aldi on a crowded saturday than walmart.

I had my first experience with Walmart in nearly three years and it was scary.

I'd not been back to the US of A for 2.5 years, and not been in a Walmart for nearly 3 years. I was shocked.

I went with my mother to help her do some shopping near Milwaukee and this included a Walmart. The greeter was scary. The cart had a bum wheel. Everywhere there were elderly people. The walking dead. The place was massive. But to quote my mother "You can't afford to shop anywhere else." (Which does surprise me as my parents are pretty well off)

Anyways, just wanted to say that I'd be happy to spend another 3 years not going to a Walmart.

Ah, '81 is when they stopped guaranteeing my satisfaction.

Frankly, I don't see what the big deal is. I can go to Wal-Mart and pick up a Motorcraft brand oil filter, Mobil 1 synthetic oil, a motorcycle battery with a no questions asked warranty, Anderson Erickson milk, a muffin tin, and some shampoo. If you're not so elitist that you can't spend 20 minutes around ugly people, it's a great place to go. Sure, they sell a lot of crap, but no one's forcing you to buy it -- I go for the good prices on stuff I actually want.

That is not correct. You don't rent the carts, you just have to put a quarter in as a deposit, which you get back when you return the cart.

The reason behind it is quite simple: Aldi provides phenomenal prices for high quality food. To do that, they save money wherever possible. Instead of hiring someone that will collect the carts and return them to the store, they'll make the customers do it. I now always have a quarter in my car ready for my Aldi run

And the coin deposit for shopping carts is the standard over here. The only stores that don’t do it are the ones that are designed in a way that makes it nearly impossible to remove the cart from inside the store. I never knew any other way.
