[Nai no Kami]

I am currently listening to a CD featuring him and Gary Burton. I like Piazzolla's work very much. Does anyone here know him or his music? If so: What do you think?.

An Argentinian friend of mine gave me a CD called "Los Mas Grande Exitos De Astor Piazzola" (it's on the Argentine Columbia label - I take it to mean "Greatest Hits Of" or something). It appears to consist of his most well-known recordings going back to the '50s, including orchestral stuff - there's not that much bandoneon on it. It's very pleasant but I suspect that the Burton album is more intimate and more interesting.

If you like bandoneon in particular, here's a lovely album featuring a guy named Alfredo Pedernera:



In case you can't see the title, it's "Selling Water By The Side Of The River" by Evan Lurie. He's a pianist (was with The Lounge Lizards) and it's a collection of ballads featuring bandoneon.

I heard one song off the album "Soul of the Tango: The Music of Astor Piazzolla" by Yo-Yo Ma (I'll let you figure out *how* I heard that song...) and instantly fell in love with the album, and seeked it out for purchase. Great music, and I think Yo-Yo Ma's interpretations are great. Of course, it is also one of the few CDs I own in that vein, so it does make it nice and unique in my collection.

Great music, though - I really want to learn the tango now, though I'm also just content to sit back and listen to it. That means the music is really good.

I like Piazzolla's work a lot. He has left a lot of room for improvement and opened a whole new conception of tango (he is actually detested by the Guardia Vieja, the most conservative tango enthusiasts). That record featuring Burton is really interesting; a frined of mine of the contiguous office lent it to me, since I was without music and he knows my particular musical taste (although Piazzolla is popular among the youth, we have to state clear that "youth" means "youth people who like tango, jazz and baroque music".
Anyway, another good record available not only here is "Los Tangueros", featuring Pablo Ziegler and Emmanuel Ax. There are really good performances of arrangements for two pianos.
The passion and force of that album is really conveying. I believe Sony is the label.
