I just got World of Warcraft thinking that it was free to play . My friend told me about a free server called medalist but it doesn't work for the mac anymore. Does anyone know any free servers that work with the mac?

You can return WOW and get a refund if you don't want to pay. But let's not get MacNN shut down.

I'm kind of curious...what's the stated reason for Blizzard's attack on free WoW servers?

WoW is all about character progression and legitimately overcoming bosses/challenges. If you play on a free server, there will be cheating galore, money will be meaningless, encounters will be meaningless, and at any given time the server could be shutdown and you will lose your characters. Seems like a waste to play if you don't want to pay for a real server.

Sorry, I didn't realize it was illegal to play on free servers. I'll probably give it to someone for their birthday then.

Their stated reason is that you don't have the legal right to do it. The actual reason is that they want the big bucks.

That's because it's not, however much Blizzard would like to write the law.

So maybe it's not "illegal", but it violates the TOS/EULA, as does hosting a free server.

This is a debate that will go nowhere.

And that's different from the servers that people currently pay for how?

Thus far, no servers have been shut down, money is still a commodity people care about, encounters still take practice and strategy to defeat and cheaters get banned rather than encouraged. So that would be quite a bit different, yeah.

I don't play WoW, but I just did a search on google for "free world of warcraft server" and got many, many results. Give it a shot, you may find what you're looking for...

The fact that your characters that you've spent months on won't be deleted on a whim...?

No kidding. Could you imagine if your Druid with full T2, T2.5, and sporting the sexiest feral gear (someone has to tank Patchwork) just disappeared because one guy decided that he just didn't want to run a server anymore? I'd hunt him down, kill him, skin him, and make a new coat out of his hide.

j/k, but I would be very pissed.

Milo - if you can't find Google let me tell you that a lot of your time playing WoW is going to be spent asking other players how to complete this quest, where you can find that item, and where can find your own ass with both hands and a full set of directions....

Only problem is they are usually a few patches behind, and only the basic stuff is loaded on the CDs, everything else downloaded from Blizzard. The servers are apparently really buggy and have a limit on max users. All the sites I find are stupid "VOTE FOR MY SITE" ranking sites with lame forums.
