I love how there are no avatars in MacNN and how signature images must be non-animated and fairly small.
Please keep it this way.
That's all I have to say on the subject

Well... Nobody has suggested adding avatars so one has to wonder what is the point of creating this thread?

Come now, Lateralus: positive comments on how we do things is both welcome and encouraged. It's good to have confirmation that people like how we do things; usually it's only people who have complains who bother to communicate.
Macintologist, thanks for the comment.

I seem to recall that people actually have suggested it a couple of times in the past.
I agree with Macintologist — MacNN is a nice break from the tidal wave of images on most forums.

Personally I don't mind small 50 or 60 pixel non-animated avatars, but I do agree that the avatars on the forums in Kevin's link are way too obnoxious.

What really steams me are both avatars AND signatures. Either have ONE, or the other, but both is just stupid.

I'd prefer avatars, actually, I guess I just find them more functional and tidy.
They show up at the beginning of the post, so it's easy to see who's posting and they don't clutter the message area. There's a lot of 'metadata' in the box on the left already and it would be clean and concise to put any random noise there.
I kinda like the way MacThemes does it.
Either way, as long as they're kept small and non-blinky, I'm ok with sigs

I'm a big fan of the MacNN signature policy. Simple, tasteful and elegant. One of these days I'll make one for myself.

Oooh, can we get smileys like Mac Themes? VB ones are boring. Non-blinky sigs and avatars are always good (doesn't kill my old PowerMac as much) and so I think static avatars and sigs would be fine.

Even with the option to turn them off I still don't want them here. I was a lurker here for a year before I signed up and I wasn't about to register just to turn off avatars (assuming I even knew it was an option). I would have just gone on to another site if I found this one annoying.

The first time the animated "More cowbell" dude pops up in a sig or avatar is the day I'm outta here. Gotta emphatically agree with the O.P.

Good. Let's keep focused on the important things at 'NN.
1) Feeding the hampstor
2) Banninating Rob
3) Keeping up with SWF's nicks
4) General bickering

No, it's not a dumb reason. Everyone starts out as a lurker. If you get pissed off by dumb gravatars, you might never want to register.

Can anyone give a better reason than "it's annoying" for having sigs over avatars..? They would seem a lot easier to restrict than signatures and make pages easier to read and shorter.
Not that I care either way, both have pros and cons - it just seems some people dislike them because they're avatars

It also depends on the culture of the forum. Neowin has them and they're not that bad. Other sites have them and they're terrible.

Well, the only downside to avatars I can think of is that their height tends to a bit higher than sigs - a typical avatar size is 80 x 80 pix. Thus, in very short messages the combined height of the username, post count, avatar and whatever buttons there are on the left <-- would make the individual post a bit higher, with whitespace.
I agree they would clean up legibility by staying out of my face more than sigs, which are there in the center of my field of vision.
Oh, and viewing avatars can be turned off for guests to lure them in unsuspecting

Well considering I can turn off Sigs (I just have) and Avatars and they can be hidden from guests, I see no problem with them.

I prefer small-scale non-animated avatars to identify posters easily, and no sigs.
Makes more sense than graphic sigs and no avatars.
