I need to tune my electric guitar down 1/2 step for a song I'm learning. Unfortunately tuner does not let me do this. Can someone recommend a way for me to do this?

Also, I think my teacher has the wrong rhythm (and notes) for the first line of the song I'm learning - is there a way to use some software to write my own line instead? This is a one-time project, so I'm not interested in buying professional software.

How about a decent chromatic tuner?

If you own an iPhone, I hear good things about cleartune:

it allows different tunings, which is cool.

Also, iStrobe blabla, which I'm looking at, though I'd really love a stretch tuning preset for my Rhodes pianos:

Get a Sabine AX-2000/3000, it's hands down the best tuner I have ever used, and it's the only one I've been using for many years.

Works on acoustic, semi-acoustic and electric guitars. No cables required. Works even with lots of background noise.

Folks, tuning a guitar down half a pitch is not rocket science. Tune it to 440, then bend the low E a tad then tune accordingly. That's if you can tune the instrument without any machine.

Tuning strings is more about vibrations than it is about sound, which are equal. No? I've always depended on vibes of the instrument and it's always worked. So what's a half tone lower? Nothing. All the musician wants is the ability to pitch his/her voice to the key.

Or..

A capo is one's best bet instead of tuning strings. Say the song's in G, but the musician can only sing a particular song in G-flat, then put a capo on first fret and learn to play tune in key of F. No biggy if knowledged.

Keep your guitar in tune and learn how to use a capo, or you'll be tuning your instrument all night long.

I'm sure that the other tuning apps mentioned are good, but if you're willing to spend around the $10 range, check out GuitarToolkit. One of the best apps I've bought and I use it constantly. It comes with a tuner, metronome, and also scales and a chord library. The chord library is awesome (although now that I've figured out how chords are constructed, I've used it less...). You can choose between a 6-string, 12-string, bass and between left-and-right handed. The tuner also has tons of alternate tunings (including half-step down).
