I'm looking to upgrade my slot loading iMac from 40GB to 120GB.

Anybody have any recommendations on what's good and what to stay away from?

Seagate seem to be popular and have a good repuation. I've never personally had a problem with Maxtor drives however where I work we've had lots of failures of 40GB models fitted to the Dells we have - Dell do replace them but their system seems to send out 1 engineer per drive.....that's another story

So now that Seagate have bought out Maxtor it may seem really confusing....

Anybody heard anything about Western Digital's 120GB HDD (8MB buffer) one?

Most 120GB drives have 8MB buffers. I'd go with Seagate instead of WD.

Seagate drives: 5 year warranty. Other drives: 1 or 3 year warranty. Which do you think is more likely to be more reliable? I go with Seagate based on this alone, since drives are otherwise quite similar performance-wise (cache size is essentially irrelevant, by the way).

I have that drive in my iMac DV. It's nice and fast, but the machine will not sleep in OS 9 or Panther. The drives continuously spins up an down during sleep and will not stop. I haven't had Tiger on that machine but I would assume it's the same deal. I would stay away from that drive.
