I have a couple of trees in the yard that are about ten feet apart. They look pretty perfect for a hammock for the summer months. I was wondering about this army surplus model. Sorry, I couldn't get a url to post the image directly.

It's the M-1965 jungle hammock. It's got a rainproof top and built in mosquito net, both of which sound nice. But even though I was a grunt in the Army, I have never seen one. We just slept on the ground in hooches.

Does anyone have any experience? Maybe one of you light infantry types?

Not much of hammock guy, but it looks pretty good, especially with the mosquito net.

Heck, no! I spent 7 years in the Army, mostly in the infantry. I have slept under the stars enough for one lifetime. I'm thinking about getting one to relax under a tree to read, whether for pleasure, or, more likely, to study.

If the mosquito net works well, I would go for it. That's the reason I don't do hammocks; when it cools off enough to use one (in the evening) the mosquitos are out in full force making it very hard to relax.

The mosquito net is an attraction. I just got the house so I don't know how bad the problem will be. But the house is not far from the river and a number of woods, so I suspect it will be bad.

I'm still hoping that someone has tried one. I'd like to know how hard it is to put up. I presume not very. Another attraction is that I assume I don't have to screw a hook into anything for this one, unlike the garden hammocks.

I'd also like to know how far the trees can be apart if anyone knows.

It can be stressful to the trees, if they aren't in the best of health. How big and old are they? Are they sturdy hardwoods?

Have you considered using a hammock stand instead? THey look nice and can go under your trees. Also, if you find you love your hammock but don't really like the spot under the trees you can move it around.

I'm not a big tree expert, but I believe they are oaks. The trunks are about 3 to 4 feet in diameter. They have probably been here since the late 50s.

do you have a lot of mosquitos where you live?

if no, then i would get something without a top. doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of being "outside"?

now, i have to admit i'm a terribly claustrophobic person, but that hammock is just a little bit "too much" no matter what. it would also be very hot and stuffy in the summer...

That's basically how I spend my weekends, unfortunately. I have to sit for at least 12 hours a day reading very dry stuff. I find I can stay awake and alert longer outdoors. Plus, it's just nice.

You didn't think that the life of a law student is all fun and play, did you? I work full time, go to school at night. That leaves only the weekends to study.

"The hammock was crap quality, provided no support, and kept breaking apart making us land on our asses. We don't like this hammock's construction at all, and of COURSE this is the industrial designers fault."

hell i live in black fly country, you some times mistake them for small birds, and i still wouldn't get the mosquito net, if i am going to be out doors, thats it. I am outside no freaking net in the way.

It's probably because I was stationed in Louisiana for a couple of years. The mosquito is the state bird. Don't let anyone try to tell you that thing is a pelican.

I used to live on the south end of old town about 50 yards from the water and it is bad. I'd get two of the hammocks and double-ply it.

As long as it's well ventilated, I'd say go for it. You could always put down a soft, flannel blanket on the bottom of the hammock to make it more gezzelig.

I think it would be fun to try it out in the rain.

That sounds suspiciously like Hunting Towers. I used to have an apartment there. Now I'm down in Mount Vernon.

THe very same. I was in the one that no longer exists. It's been about 3.5 years since I moved into the city though.

I was in the middle building, now the building closest to the river. I moved out a few years before you and into the city, before turning around in the opposite direction.

Hunting Towers was pretty good before they started the bridge construction. I feel so sorry for the residents there now.

That hammock looks perfect for backpacking.

Nice and light.

The only thing I am not crazy about is the coloring. It would seem to be a heat sink for the suns rays. But if using it for backpacking you really wouldn't be in it during the day anyway.

Also, being off the ground during a rain storm out in the middle of no where would be a better thing.

I'd just make sure where ever you place it you are not in direct sunlight.
