Hey all,
I've been using poisoned lately but I can't seem to get my 15" albook (10.2.7) to play back the avi files I have downloaded. the MPEG files plaback without a hitch. When I play back the AVI files I get "Quicktime is missing software required to display this movie file. Unfortunately it is not available on the quictime server"
I have ordered my update of Panther so have refrained from downloading 10.2.8 until I get Panther. Any suggestions?
cheers,Tim

AVI is just a container file, not a format.
Find out what type of video & audio the AVI holds, download the codec, put it in the quicktime plugins folder and you're set. That I know of Xvid, DivX, and OGG codecs work great with OSX and Quicktime.
This article and its comments have links to all the codecs you should need to play that file with quicktime (unless its wm9, then you're out of luck):

Another vote for Videolan. It'll play most anything.

I was having some issues with DivX files that my PC friend had given me, wherein the audio would not play. This weekend I installed VLC, and it works great. The controller is decent, the sound is good, it plays full screen well, and even plays any region DVDs (not to mention it is free). The only problem is that VLC doesn't like the video files from my Canon PowerShot camera (that's okay though, now I still have a purpose for QuickTime). I totally recommend VLC!
