depending on how you transfer them, the file names are not actually shortened on the disk, but they are when displayed in the finder (and most other programs) in OS 9. The only program I know of that retains long file names in OS 9 is Limewire, but that doesn't do you any good anyway. The best way to preserve your long filenames is to upgrade to OS X and use a file transfer program that supports long file names (the Finder and iTunes in OS X both support long filenames, though quicktime 5 infuriatingly still does not). I don't know which ftp programs do, and to get someone to tell you, you might want to change the title of this thread to reflect that your problem is really not related to mp3's at all, but to support for filenames over 31 characters.
