I don't watch the 'idol' shows or any of their spin-offs, and if it wasnt for CNN, i would have missed this gem.

You guys, just have to have a listen to this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luRmM1J1sfg

Irrespective of coming from the most unlikely of performers, it just sounds amazing, and imo, the best i've heard from any of these shows.

I saw that posted elsewhere. It is totally worth it for the utter look of shock and dawning respect on the judges faces, she sings so beautifully.

I liked the heavily made-up girl in the audience, rolling her eyes at her friend when Susan said she wanted to be a singer.

It's about time a homely person gets some face time on television.

Good grief yes, all those Union Jacks everywhere. *shudder*

(Honestly, I don’t see why they put her through to the next round—she wasn’t a good dancer, and dancing was what her act was supposed to be about. Sheer provocativeness [however original] ≠ talent)

From what I've seen and heard, the US crowd sounds like a bunch of dying cows in a hail storm compared to the Brits. She was great.

That would be a waste of her talent imo.

I mean if she was in concert with songs like the one she sang, i'd go.

She has a very 'Britania' feel to her voice..... I would love to see picked up by Disney for animated-movie-musicals, or something like that, rather than have her be a one hit wonder.

I mean i can picture her doing something like a musical based on Britain's resistance during WWII or something of that nature.

Cheers

That that woman made it through makes a complete mockery of the whole show.

Who are those three to judge talent? They obviously have no freaking idea what it is.

But perhaps with some professional coaching, which I assume she has not benefitted from in buttscratch Scotland.

Awfully good for an untrained voice, but probably about par for your average west end/broadway performer.

Why would you assume that? Did they say that in the video? I don't remember. I grew up in a city under 200000, and we had a Royal Conservatory of Music and some phenomenal musicians and singers.

Anyways, you can find good singers at just about any university with a music school for example. If she's truly completely untrained, then her performance is surprising, but if she is trained then not so much. Still a good singer though.

Yeah, it's like Paul Potts - he had private opera lessons in Italy and had performed in at least six operas, but since those were "amateur" productions and he made his living as a phone salesman, he was an Amateur Sensation™.

Of course, since nobody *really* gives a rat's ass about "classical" music or musicals, and certainly hardly anybody has enough clue to actually discern actual quality of the performance, this sort of phenomenon only works if the artist is disfigured, handicapped (hello Andrea Bocelli - and goodbye, Andrea Bocelli), or in some other way completely off the track of conventional pop aesthetics (hello Ms Boyle). Whether these people are actually *good* is completely irrelevant, as long as they're MEDIALLY surprising or interesting.

I'm no expert either, but I do think she's pretty good and esp. good by reality show standards. I think if she was truly mediocre by reality show standards, few would have cared.

I do agree though that part of this sensation is due to the fact that many misjudged her based on her frumpy looks.

Too grainy and brittle.

But she's Scottish and looks like Frodo's mom. Will prolly end up as our next prime minister or something.

She recorded a song for a CD in 1999

But the Record can reveal she made her first recording back in 1999, when she sang blues ballad Cry Me A River for a charity CD.

Heh.

Her performance seems to have given "I Dreamed a Dream" a new life of its own. The song shot up to 39 on the iTunes chart of top downloaded songs by Thursday night.

Listen to Britain's Got Talent's Susan Boyle sing Cry Me a River.

Looks like Shrek. Sounds like Jessica Rabbit. Most disconcerting.

I was confused at first - she said she was singing a song from the Wizard of Oz, but it was actually from Les Mis. Doesn't take anything away from her performance. I've heard several students in the halls talking about the video and asking why they judge people based on their looks.

Had this woman been attractive and graceful the reaction would have blase as her performance.

She was decent, but not amazing by any stretch.
Being in debt and celebrating a lower deficit is like being on a diet and celebrating the fact you gained two pounds this week instead of five.

Celebrity makeover:

Time: Not Quite Out of Nowhere

Luciano Pavarotti, for one, had an idea about Potts. While Potts' hometown, Fishponds, is not an upscale neighborhood, he went to St. Mary's Redcliffe, one of the best non-private schools in Bristol. After he graduated with honors from university, he went on a quiz-cum-talent show hosted by Michael Barrymore and won enough money to take singing classes in Italy. There he performed for Pavarotti.

Upon Potts' return to England, he worked his way through the amateur opera scene. According to the program for a 2003 Bath Opera production of Aida in which he appeared, he had already sung with that company several times and with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. But that same year, he had a nasty bicycle accident. Health difficulties and medical bills took him away from opera and into his job selling phones. (Read "Why American Idol Keeps Soaring.")

Boyle's story is similar but with fewer light notes. Her hardscrabble town was Blackburn in Scotland. She also auditioned for a Barrymore TV show, but didn't make the cut. Yet she took singing lessons and recorded Cry Me a River for a charity CD in 1999, the same year she made a demo tape. An observant Catholic, she often sang at church and on karaoke nights. So her talent was no surprise to her neighbors. "Everyone here knew she could sing," Jackie Russell, manager of the local pub, told the AP. "We were always saying, 'You should go in for talent competitions.'" What held Boyle back was caring for her aging parents. She entered BGT, after her mother died, because she was approached by talent scouts from the show who asked her to enter.

Potts and Boyle are not, in short, two undiscovered singers who never got their shot at fame. Their stories are less telegenic than the one sold by Britain's Got Talent, but much more common. Thousands of singers take their shot and fail, just as these two had.
