I have 4 that work (2 are stuffed), they are 266 and 1 333. I run a combo of different operating systems including 10.3.9. By the way, do you know how to take advantage of a HD that is larger than 8 Gb? I partitioned the thing like I'm supposed to but cannot seem to get disk utility to take advantage of the second partition. I'm sure it is something simple that I have missed. I use the iMacs for different audio tasks and would like to explore the possibility of using them in parallel with my G5 tower.

I have a 500MHz indigo one, w/ and 80gig drive and 320mb of RAM, it does the job for web and word work, though I'm definently looking to replace it before the new school year begins.

I still think it is one of Apple's most glorious designs and it has yet to fail me, very very stable w/ 10.3.9.

My Violet 233 G3 is basically a snood , photo-storing , mail serving computer. I keep alot of old restored photos on the 80Gb external drive.

i have g3 600 in my office. dead silent which i require, probably a little more than half my time spent on a computer is on this. if it ever dies there is no shortage of replacements on ebay for less than $200. the aps i use on it are mozilla, appleworks, macwise, checkmark payroll, itunes, and macsolitaire. it's running 10.2.8 and 9.2.2. no need to upgrade os's or find a faster machine. classic design.

Yeah, I know the 700 mhz model is hard to come by these days. I actually purchased it over ebay a few years back on "accident." I was looking at the auction to check it out and pressed "buy it now". It was nearly 2 in the morning and I wasn't thinking straight. Fortunately, I had the funds to cover my actions. I considered going through the motions to "unbuy" it but I saw the procedures involved and decided it wasn't worth the effort.

Our "regular" computer is a Bondi G3 with a 400 mhz processor and a CD-RW drive I hacked in years ago. Combine that with maxxed out ram (512) and a big hard drive, and you have one great machine for surfing the web, checking e-mail, light home office work and organizing pictures and music.

I'm using a 233 Bondi at work (I just brought it in and set it on my desk- nobody said anything!) and I'm sure my friend Stef is still using the Bondi I set up for her, even though she moved far away.

Great machines, excellent, stable design, long life (my two never get shut off, and don't really have any problems).

Yes, I will upgrade someday, but I will never get rid of the Bondi as long as it works!

ValVashon, you can actually put up to 1 gig in your iMac. Apple just said that they could take 512mb but they can take more. beetleboy, that is cool how you got your 700MHz. I don't think I have ever seen one on ebay, and I have been looking forever.

I still use my iMac DV SE 400mhz (Graphite), and it still runs great. Upgraded it to 1GB RAM and 80GB 7200rpm drive last year, plus found an original Airport card on eBay and stuck that in there. It's running Tiger 10.4.7 with no problems for web browsing, music streaming, and VNC server so I can login from other machines. It is a bit slow sometimes, but it is what it is - the best computer I have ever had...

I think it's amazing how this machine can run the current Mac OS and I purchased it new the year it came out, which I believe was 1999. Not to start a platform war here or anything, but how many PC's from 7 years ago can run Windows XP, and run it well (forget about Vista)?

My next upgrade for it will be an internal CD or DVD burner, if I can find a good price on a slot-load that would work in it. Right now, it is strictly DVD-ROM, and I know I can use an external, but it would be nice to have it all-in-one...

When I upgraded the HDD in my Lime DV 400 from 10GB to 120GB I was amazed at how quiet it became. It's quieter than my G4 FP. I hope she continues to plug away for years to come.

In addtion, applemacsatx, I concur with your statements about our 7 year-old machines still being able to run the lastest OS. Top that, Windoze!

Since this thread has managed to gather a bunch of G3 iMac users, I shall pose a question.

My 500MHz iMac only has 320 MB of RAM, 1 stick of 256 that I bough and 1 of the 64meg sticks that came w/ it, would it make sense to upgrade to 2x 256(256 is only 25$ on OWC) or would 1x256 and 1x512 be even better(512 is 69$ currently) I intend to keep this machine for quite a while longer but it has been lagging a little in Word and iTunes lately.

Thanks guys!

If it were me, I would just put 2x512 sticks in it and be done with it. Adding the most possible RAM to an older machine is the only way to really make it faster, unless you went ahead and found a later logic board and processor that is a bit faster.

I'm pretty sure the max on the old G3 iMacs is 1GB, so that is what I put in mine. I was considering doing the same thing you are, using one of my existing 256 sticks, but decided against it. At the bare minimum, I would get one 512 stick and have 768 MB, especially if you are running Panther or newer...

a 700 MHz Blue Dalamtion (love the color, sick bastard that I am) is my kitchen computer. Forget the exact config on it, but I think it has 512gb and 10.3 whatever on it. It gets used for email, net, music, and kids games. Still runs like a champ... but alas it and my iBook are soon to be retired and replaced by a MBP if Apple unleashes the Merom versions soon.
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

My first and only Mac purchased in 2001 is an iMac 500 Indigo. An education model with 64 megs of memory was insufficient to run Mac OS 10.0.4. I purchased 2 sticks of 512 megs of memory from OWC and it runs Panther Mac OS 10.3.9 very good with the exception of video H.264. If not for a technophobic neighbor who bought it for $799, I paid her $400, to email but never connected to the internet, I never would have experienced a Mac. No local vendors advertised Macs and I knew no one with a Mac. I thought the universe was populated with Dells and I probably would have joined their ranks. It has allowed me the opportunity to avoid all the corruptions my pc using neighbors complained to me about. They are so impressed one neighbor bought a Mac Mini and two others are looking at iMacs. I joined a MUG and am now an enthusiastic proselytiser

I have two 400 MHz iMac DVs. I put 120GB 7200 rpm HDs and 512MB RAM in them - they run OSX Tiger just great.

I purchased a new iMac - a mactel - in early 2006. The G3 iMacs really have set the bar high for this new machine!

I still use my iMac G3 DV 400MHz(350 overclocked to 400) for normal internet use. I use my PowerMac to watch TV and my PowerBook for everything else. My iMac is still running strong, it's about 7 years old now. It's a bit slow on Tiger so I had to disable dashboard to speed it up. Other than that, it's great.

My iMac DV (Graphite) is my primary computer. It has been upgraded with a 40 GB HDD and now has 256MB of RAM. It is slow, but I use it instead of my P4-3Ghz just for OSX.

I just realized that my school still uses iMac DVs for video editing. The machines are 500Mhz G3s.

My School gave me 5 teal 330's. It's great, they each run 1 app all at the same time, so i have a computer for internet explorer: mac, word, powerpoint, aim for mac, etc. To bad I never use them..
I miss the days of the G5 and XPS Pentium 4 running side by side as high-end machines.

Just like Tuoder, my iMac 500 DV SE (Graphite) is my primary computer. I do a lot of my essay typing and stuff like that for school purposes. I also do some Garageband stuff on it as well, despite the fact that it freaks out after more than 3-4 tracks are added.

When i move back home in september Im going to try and find a cheap G3 for my parents to use. They already have a G4 iMac, but they frequently need to be online at the same time. I'm going to definitely try and max out the RAM, add a bigger HD and install Panther on it. Once I actually get the imac, I'll let you know the specs so I can find out how much RAM it'll take.

I just went into Voelker Research, an Apple Specialist here in Colorado Springs. They sell used Macs too and they said that they had a sweet 500MHz iMac G3 coming in with a gig of RAM and a 60 gig HD for $99. It has the keyboard and mouse and powercord. Does this sound like a good deal?

I have a G3 600mhz sitting in my lounge with a fried flyback transformer, was going to try and fix it but its quite technical and i would prob kill myself in the process. Can't bring myself to throw it out though so would like to turn it into a macquarium one day.

I have an iMac DVse 400mhz - it was an insanely futuristic machine back then. A few years ago the Firewire stopped working; taking it apart and blowing the dust out fixed it. The video card seems to have burnt up a bit, possibly due to the lack of a fan.

I've got 1GB RAM in it, but would like to upgrade the 20GB HD. But I'm wondering if 7200rpm drives run a bit hot - should I try to find a 5400rpm drive? They're exceedingly rare these days.

Is there any other internal upgrades I could consider? Especially... cooling! Is there any way to improve the cooling situation? It runs really hot!

7200 rpm drives work fine in iMac DVs - I think maybe the first ones which came out ran a bit warmer, but modern ones run cooler.

To ensure the best cooling, make sure the holes at the bottom and top are clear for a good flow of air - best not to box it in an unvented enclosure.
You could I suppose fit a fan in the top half of the shell and get it to vent out through the top holes and power it from the HD supply - but this would mean getting to the top of the unit which is more complex and exposes the CRT.

I have heard it both ways when it comes to 7200-RPM drives in CRT iMacs. The best explanation that I head was that old 7200-RPM HDDs ran too hot for these Macs, but new ones don't. If you are worried about cooling, I would run a fan either pushing air into the bottom or out of the top. They are naturally convection-cooled, so adding a fan should cool things right off.

I have a 120 GB, 7200 RPM drive in my Lime iMac G3 400 and it runs great. As far as I can tell it's never overheated since installing this new drive. In addition, the new drive has been in the unit for over 2 years.

My tangerine iMac is now used by my dad to surf, check e-mails and potter about on the internet. Despite getting on a bit when I gave it to him, it was actually quite an upgrade from his aged beige G3 (which still gets 'business' use)! The only thing that ever failed on it was the modem during a thunderstorm.

My folks also have a sapphire iMac upstairs that plays music when my folks are getting ready to go out, or clean the upstairs!

I would like to upgrade it to run OS X to allow me to run the Creativce Suite design package. I realise that i will need to install more ram etc. Is there much involved when attempting to remove 0S9 and install OSX? I only have a basic level of understanding on how macs run.

You just install OSX over OS 9

Ok, but is it a relatively simple process to someone who has no experience in this. Will it just be a case of popping in the disk and letting the computer do the rest? Do i need to delete any files? will i need to back up any files? Do a need to worry about Firmware updates?

The reason i ask, is ive read a lot of comments from people who have attempted the same thing, but have found conflicts on there machines, resulting in the machine becoming unusable.

Hey,

Do you want to backup anything on there? I recently upgraded the gf's strawberry G3 to Panther I think and i backed up her stuff to an external HD and stuck the discs in and away it went. Just ran all the updates when it was re-installed.

Theres nothing on there in terms of work that i need to keep. So in simple terms, i put the disk in and i will be able to follow the on screen instructions to install 0SX. A friend told me that i may need to upgrade OS9 right up to the latest one before changing to OSX, does that make sense?

How much ram will i need to install? its only on 264mb at the moment, i was thinking of taking it up to 1 GB, but if i can get away with less then i will.

I'll check the update procedure for you regarding the update to Panther.

Ram max it out, we've got a 512 chip in ours and it's ok.
