Whats the next big thing ? Personal computers to desktop publishing to the internet to the digital hub.
Some claim 'web 2.0' and social networking are the next big thing for the computer industry. Personally, im not convinced of that.
Skimming over the prospects across industries, i don't know of any product/process/service that can be labeled the 'next big thing'.
I guess alternate fuels and electric cars have some potential.
What do you guys thing ?
Cheers

electric cars are a while off (for daily/consumer use) but they seem to be the most likely "next big thing"

I've been waiting for Windows ME 2 for so long! I hear it's going to have this awesome search feature called 'Searchlight', that they're replacing the old taskbar with a new one, code-named 'Jetty', and that they'll be replacing the underlying NT system with NetBSD.

--Consumer-level 3D printers (the kind that "print" 3D representations of drawings using layers of paper/wood/plastic)
--Consumer-level CNC machines to make stuff for you (along the same lines as the 3D printer above but intended to produce working objects)

Resolution independent GUI. Everyone wants LCDs, so now you have to deal with fixed resolutions.
Too bad Samsung pretty much abandoned thin CRT technology. I'm not impressed with LCDs.

Actually - the next big thing will be Starbuck's instant coffee.
Easier to bring to work, and hopefully cheaper.

I wonder if given the recent deal between Apple & LG (which are partners of Philips) the 'Next Big Thing' when it comes to Apple would be something like this.
Beyond the astonishing 56" of display goodness, it is the true cinema aspect ratio which I find more prone to left you in awe, pretty much like the 4000€ you would have to burn.

Actually, I’ve just been informed by a very reliable source in the know (who, however, wishes to remain anonymous) that the next big thing will not be iPhones, cable-free electricity, eco-friendly cars, or any such nonsense, but squirrels.
You heard it here first.

Nut storage can be a problem, so I shall add to this list: Parachute pants.
Voluminous pantaloons + trouser squirrel = unstoppable combo.
edit: DUAL trouser squirrels + parachute pants! Once you get that tag-team action going on the dancefloor all the ladies will be running.

I'm still waiting for a future world that has flying cars. Hovercraft do not count.
The squirrels can drive them if you insist.

The next big things that will happen in the very near future:
1. Netbooks or small internet-based devices based on NVIDIA's Ion platform. Netbooks will no longer be seen for just for email, web browsing, and occasional word document.
2. Windows 7 will be big. It won't' offer anything technologically new or superior, but its mainstream adoption will push XP into the minority. Right now XPs market share is about 50% and Vistas is 25%. The Vista/Win 7 code base will become the mainstream OS.
3. Darknets will become mainstream.
