is it worth noting , that i removed the case and looked at the motherboard , there are a few caps bulging but nothing leaking? could this be the root of all my problems? i can use the imac for quite some time before it actually crashes and when i tested the ram using remeber i got a error so i dont know what to think lol its such a good machine is it worth buying new ram from a guranteed source OR are all these 'bad ram , bad hard drive ' just symptoms of the bad caps? thanks

That is highly likely to be your problem. It looks like the GPU is misbehaving. I have seen that happen due to bad caps. On the other hand the VRAM tends to fail on these too. Have you ever seen strange patterns of artefacts across the screen? Typically they are a pink/purple-ish colour.

Bulging caps can be replaced. Its time consuming if you aren't well practiced or equipped but its not that hard.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

the screen has malfunctioned once or twice but if i log out or reset the mac it dont do it again. ive got one stick of 512 in at the minute , i have another 512 stick and when i put that one in , it boots - if it wants lol but the system does not state it has 1gb , it just stays at 512.

the majority of the time when i get a kernel panic , its just loads of numbers. it mentions iousb at times but thats rare. again maybe this is all due to the caps? when its on it works great but its very temperamental. what would you suggest? thanks for the reply.

It's the capacitors. Your machine is going to die.

The dodgy caps are screwing up power distribution throughout your machine. You need to replace them or the logic board.

I'm typing this on a PPC G4 Mini. Got it brand new when it came out. Runs 24/7 and never lets me down. LOVE this machine!
